Vranovice: Brdy, Cycling and Local History
Accommodation in Vranovice
Vranovice combines the Brdy landscape with opportunities for cycling and several aspects of local history. This offers different considerations when choosing where to stay: the forest complex shapes the landscape, Route 2273 provides a specific trail, and archaeological sites and works of art each add their own distinctive features. This can help you decide whether the landscape, outdoor activities and local history match your travel interests.
Brdy, Excursions and Cycling Route
The large Brdy forest complex stretches north and west of Vranovice; Třemšín Nature Park lies on the southern edge of the Brdy. These two details provide different points of reference: the forest complex is located in relation to the town, while the nature park is described by its position on the edge of the Brdy. The location near the Brdy offers opportunities for interesting excursions on foot and by bicycle. If you would like to plan a specific cycling trip, Route 2273 provides a clear point of reference: it runs 20.2 km from Trokavec to Vranovice. The start, destination and route length are specified; Vranovice is one endpoint of the route. Check the current route markings and condition before setting out. Vranovice is also located on the road between Příbram and Rožmitál pod Třemšínem.
Archaeological Sites
The Melichárek castle site is an immovable cultural monument with archaeological traces of a fortification. It dates from the 13th to the 15th century. Only the central mound remains; the ditches have since been filled in. The dating provides the historical context, while the central mound and filled-in ditches describe the site's state of preservation. It is therefore best understood through its archaeological remains, rather than as a fully preserved castle complex.
The Vranovická hůrka castle site offers different points of reference. It lies on a lightly wooded rise in the fields, about 500 m northwest of the edge of Vranovice. The low perimeter ramparts are easiest to see from the north. Whereas Melichárek can be identified by its date and the mound that remains, the key points for finding Hůrka are its location and viewing direction. The two archaeological sites thus differ in the features that are useful for locating them.
Swimming Pool, Millstone and Chapel
The swimming pool is another kind of historic landmark. A basin originally used as a reservoir for firefighting was formally opened as a public swimming pool in 1975. A stone millstone was installed on the pool's dam as a memorial. Alongside the basin's former use and its later opening, there is also a separate memorial on the dam. If the swimming pool is important to your stay, check current access in advance.
The chapel houses a Baroque statue of Saint Anne from the late 18th century. It adds a sacred work of art to the archaeological castle sites and the history of the swimming pool. The landmarks mentioned here span widely different periods: from medieval Melichárek, through the statue from the late 18th century, to the swimming pool's opening in 1975. This timeline helps distinguish the different historical themes of Vranovice.
