Tuhaň: Nature, Landscape and Culture
Accommodation in Tuhaň
Tuhaň is an old village in the Polabí region near the right bank of the Labe River. The village lies on slightly elevated, firm ground; the surrounding area is sandy, loose and not very fertile. Thus, a firm, slightly elevated village site meets a landscape shaped by sandy soils. If you are looking for a hotel in Tuhaň, you can plan your trip around the themes you want your stay to focus on: protected habitats, a cycling route or the community’s cultural life. This raises different questions: Which landscapes define the protected areas, and which route or event suits the purpose of your trip?
Sandy grasslands on the eastern edge of the village
On the eastern edge of Tuhaň lies the Písčina u Tuhaně Natural Monument. It covers about 0.43 hectares and has been protected since 2007 for its exceptionally well-preserved sandy grassland communities. Typical plants include sand plantain (Plantago arenaria) and grey hair-grass (Corynephorus canescens). The sandy grassland communities belong to the associations Thero-Airion and Corynephorion canescens. This brings both specific plant species and protected plant communities into focus. You may enter protected habitat areas only if permitted.
Floodplain and waterscapes
The Úpor-Černínovsko Nature Reserve extends along both banks of the Labe River between Neratovice and Mělník. Its landscape features include floodplain forests, floodplain meadows and oxbow lakes. It also protects natural eutrophic waters, floodplain meadows in river valleys, extensively mown lowland meadows, and populations of specially protected plant and animal species. Unlike Písčina, with its sandy grasslands, the focus here is on river floodplains, waters and floodplain forests. Part of the Úpor-Černínovou European Site extends into the cadastral area of Tuhaň.
Distinguishing between the cycling and pilgrimage routes
The Elbe Cycle Route, Labská cyklotrasa No. 24, runs directly through Tuhaň. A different route detail applies to the Blaník–Říp Pilgrimage Route: a 4.4-kilometre section leads from Neratovice to Tuhaň. The 4.4 kilometres refers to this connection between the two places, not to the entire pilgrimage route. This lets you distinguish the cycle route through Tuhaň from the described section of the pilgrimage route when planning your trip around a specific route. Details of the pilgrimage route stages may be updated; check with the route operator beforehand if needed. Surface conditions on the Elbe Cycle Route may also change.
Traditional pilgrimage gathering
The community’s cultural life includes the traditional, recurring pilgrimage event “Setkání přátel aneb den plný her a pohody” (“Friends’ Gathering, or a Day Full of Games and Good Times”). It is considered one of Tuhaň’s key cultural activities, offering a different focus from the protected areas and routes. Individual programs may change. If you would like to plan your trip around this gathering, check the dates and the program in advance.
