Medonosy lies in a deep valley of the Liběchovka, which cuts through the hills of the Ralská pahorkatina. The area is part of the Kokořínsko Protected Landscape Area. If you are looking for a destination with a distinctive landscape and local architectural history, Medonosy offers two clearly distinct perspectives: the nature of the valley and its historic buildings and landmarks.

Nature between gorges and uplands

More than a hundred plant species around Medonosy are endangered and need protection. Mountain and submontane plants, mostly moisture-loving species, grow in the shady gorges. By contrast, the sunlit uplands are home to plants that thrive in dry, warm conditions. This contrast between shady, damp and sunny, dry habitats is a distinctive feature of the local landscape.

Rare insect, bird and aquatic species are also found in the Medonosy ecosystem. For travellers interested in nature and landscapes, both the contrast between gorge and upland and the diversity of species present are key features.

Houses and architectural history

Fifty cottages in Medonosy have preserved their original appearance and period-typical architectural layouts almost unchanged. The houses in the area are predominantly two-storey log or half-timbered buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.

One rural house in Medonosy displays a particularly intricate architectural form: its core dates from the late 18th century. It is predominantly two-storey and built of logs, with a two-bay floor plan. It also features an asymmetrical gabled roof, a recessed gallery and a support structure on the ground floor. The short utility wing has a half-timbered room on the upper floor.

Another example of the area’s architectural history is the Baroque Church of St James. Dating from 1712, it stands on Gothic foundations. Since 1966, it has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Medonosy also has 31 buildings listed as nationally protected architectural monuments. The cottages and the church illustrate the breadth of local architectural history, from rural housebuilding to Baroque religious architecture.

Landmarks and the route

At the entrance to the area from the direction of Mělník stands a sandstone statue of Saint Ludmila dating from the mid-19th century. The Knížecí studánka spring is topped by a Neoclassical canopy. Historically, it was described as a plentiful spring with good drinking water. The watermill at house number 1 in Medonosy has a mill installation dated 1788. The statue, spring and mill add specific landmarks of different materials and dates to the area’s architectural history.

In section P3 – Medonosy, most of the bunkers are located directly on or close to a green-marked hiking trail.
