During a stay in Kokořín, it is worth distinguishing between two buildings with similar names: Hrad Kokořín is the protected castle complex; Zámek Kokořín is a Baroque chateau in the center of the municipality. Nearby, you will also find the Kokořínské Pokličky rock formations and the landscapes of the Kokořínský důl Nature Reserve. This lets you choose different focuses: the castle complex, the village square, or the natural landscape.

Hrad Kokořín: Castle Complex and Tour

The protected Hrad Kokořín complex includes the Old and New Palaces, the main tower, and the stair tower. Other features include a stair terrace with a rock chamber on the north side of the castle courtyard, the perimeter wall, and a well outside the castle proper. A stable carved into the rock, a bridge, and the outer bailey are also part of the complex.

Hrad Kokořín can be reached by car from three directions. You can leave your vehicle in the last parking lot below the castle; from there, it is less than a kilometer uphill to the castle. The second tour is self-guided. It includes climbing the 37.5-meter-high defensive tower for views of the surrounding countryside, as well as visiting a historical exhibition in the basement. As the tour arrangements may change, check the current visitor information before traveling. You should also check the parking conditions before setting out.

Zámek Kokořín: Baroque Chateau on the Village Square

Zámek Kokořín stands in the center of the municipality of Kokořín. The Baroque chateau dates from the mid-18th century and includes outbuildings. It is single-story, with a red facade, corner towers, and an onion dome. The Sweerts-Špork family had it built as a country residence. On the village square in front of Zámek Kokořín stands a Baroque sculptural group of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, dating from 1700.

Zámek Kokořín is not open to the public. At the same time, it is a prominent feature of the village square and an interesting place to visit while exploring the Kokořín Valley. This clearly distinguishes it from the Hrad Kokořín castle complex, which has a self-guided tour. If you are interested in local history, both the architecture of the Baroque chateau and the sculptural group offer points of interest—although the chateau itself cannot be visited by the public.

Kokořínský důl Nature Reserve

The Kokořínský důl Nature Reserve also includes the cadastral area of Kokořín. The area features sandstone terrain with ravines, rock steps, smaller rock cities, and forms created by weathering, including the Pokličky. The landscape also includes extensive wetlands: springs and bodies of water, the Pšovka River and its tributaries, reed beds, sedge marshes and wet meadows, as well as alder and ash-alder alluvial forests. The natural landscape is therefore defined by more than its rock formations; waterways and wetland habitats are also among its characteristic features.

Kokořínské Pokličky: Sandstone and Erosion

Near Kokořín, the Kokořínské Pokličky are located where Kokořínský Důl and Vojtěšský Důl meet. The formations, which are up to 12 meters high, are made of sandstone and shaped by erosion. The path leading to them is accessible to all age groups. The Pokličky therefore offer a natural attraction that differs from the historic buildings: the focus here is on geological formations and how they were created, while Hrad and Zámek showcase the architectural history of the area.
