Sovínky: History, Landscape and Routes
Accommodation in Sovínky
If you are looking for hotels in Sovínky, its local history and landscape can help you get a sense of the destination. Sovínky lies amid agricultural land and is part of a historic, relatively regular system of village settlements. The castle with its church, fortification traces near Syslov, and cycling and walking routes through the area offer different ways to explore during your stay. You can get to know Sovínky through its architectural history, its natural and water features, or the routes through the valley.
Landscape and Water Features
The historic settlement pattern is closely connected with agricultural land. Forest and natural areas lie in the southern part of the cadastral area. West of Sovínky, there is a watercourse that carries water intermittently and a water basin. The area can thus be understood through three specific features: agricultural land shapes the settlement system, forest and natural areas lie to the south, and watercourses and a basin lie to the west.
Hydrologically, Sovínky belongs to the Košátecký potok catchment area. The area also lies within the Severočeská křída protected area for natural groundwater recharge. These two designations relate to different aspects: the catchment area describes the hydrological connection to the Košátecký potok, while the protected area indicates its location within a zone of natural groundwater recharge. Together, they complement the visible landscape features with a hydrological description of the area.
Castle History and Fortification Traces
The first documented mention of Sovínky dates from 1360. In 1654, the village was granted the privilege of holding a weekly market and two annual fairs. The dates mark different historical aspects: the early written mention and the later market rights.
Sovínky Castle and its church were created at the beginning of the 20th century by converting a building on the farmstead. The farmstead stood next to a fortification, which was demolished in 1975 and completely removed from the village landscape. The castle is visible from the main road that runs through the village towards Velké Všelisy.
The Syslov fortification is located on a promontory near Sovínky. Its central area, damaged by excavations, remains, along with a broad neck ditch and rampart. The fortification traces differ: the fortification by the castle was demolished, while the central area, neck ditch, and rampart remain at Syslov.
To reach Syslov, follow the road from Sovínky towards Boreč, then take a turnoff and climb up to the site. Admission is free. As conditions on the ground may vary, check the route to the site before your visit.
