Klášter Hradiště nad Jizerou combines the history of a medieval monastery with a brewery complex and named cycling and hiking routes. If you are looking for a hotel in the area, these themes can help shape your trip planning: historic buildings, the history of brewing, or a tour of the region.

Monastery and Brewery

The monastery was founded in 1145 and destroyed by the Hussites in 1420. The ruins were later converted into a château and turned into a brewery in 1852. The sequence of monastery, château and brewery places the site’s historical uses in chronological order. The main portal of the original monastery has been preserved in the former monastic courtyard. The north portal stands in the central part of the site as a freestanding wall. Its stepped portal ends in a pointed arch and is richly decorated with plant motifs.

The Klášter Brewery has nearly 20-metre-deep rock cellars, where the beer is still fermented and matured today. The cellars are therefore also evidence of the brewery’s continued use. For technical reasons, brewery tours are suspended until further notice. If you are planning a tour, check again for the latest information before you travel.

Church and Crypt

Kostel Narození Panny Marie is a single-nave branch church in the Gothic-Renaissance style and is protected by the state as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It was built around 1560. An Early Gothic portal has been preserved on the north side of its nave. The crypt and the roofed fragment of the presbytery were reconstructed in 1997.

The crypt was intended as a burial place for prominent members of the monastery. An archaeological investigation found graves cut into the rock inside it. The crypt can be visited by prior arrangement; the keys are available to borrow from the municipal office. If you plan to visit the crypt, make arrangements well before your arrival.

Cycling and Hiking Routes

Two different routes associated with the area are worth considering when planning a cycling trip. Cycle Route 223 passes through Svijany and Mnichovo Hradiště on its way to Klášter Hradiště nad Jizerou. A 55 km circular cycling route runs from Mladá Boleslav through Mnichovo Hradiště and back. It passes through Klášter Hradiště nad Jizerou and by the former château-brewery complex. The routes differ in their layout: the places mentioned are key stops along Cycle Route 223 on the way to its destination, while the circular route is described by its loop and total distance.

A blue hiking trail runs from Mnichovo Hradiště to Klášter Hradiště nad Jizerou. The route is 17.3 km long and takes five hours. This gives you both distance and duration for the hike; the cycling loop is described by its length. Route markings and cycling-route surfaces may change, as may conditions on the hiking trail. It is therefore a good idea to check the current route before setting out.

Boat Trip in the Wider Area

The section of the Jizera between Mnichovo Hradiště and Mladá Boleslav is considered suitable for beginners and families. The four weirs on this section are not navigated. There is also a place to launch a boat near the Restaurace Skála brewery restaurant. A boat should be reserved in good time; check availability and the specific launch arrangements in advance.
