Discover Petkovy: History and Nature
Accommodation in Petkovy
Petkovy consists of the districts of Petkovy and Čížovky. To get your bearings, explore the history of the two districts, the building “Sýpka – bývalá tvrz,” which is protected as an immovable cultural monument, and the Čížovky Nature Park in the surrounding area. A described cycling tour also passes through Petkovy. As you plan your trip, you can therefore explore specific historical connections as well as a landscape highlight and an activity-focused attraction.
Local history and different historical periods
The settlement’s original name was Petkov. It derives from the personal name Petko, a diminutive of Petr, and in this name meant “Petko’s farmstead.” Petkovy has been documented in written sources since 1393. Čížovky was first mentioned in 1382 under the name Čížová (“villa Czizowa”) as a possession of the Prague Archbishopric. In 1556, Petkovy belonged to the Březno estate. The dates refer to different aspects: 1382 to Čížovky, 1393 to the first written record of Petkovy, and 1556 to Petkovy’s estate affiliation at the time.
The Sýpka Cultural Monument
Petkovy is home to the building “Sýpka – bývalá tvrz,” which is protected as an immovable cultural monument. It is a grain store in a farmyard, with remains of a former fortress. The building therefore brings together two historical connections: its function as a storehouse and its link to a former fortification. Unlike the dates in the local history, the Sýpka is a specific architectural feature of the village. If you are interested in cultural history, you can include this monument as a local highlight in your travel plans.
Čížovky Nature Park and the landscape
The 386-hectare Čížovky Nature Park lies in the surroundings of Petkovy. Its landscape includes wooded areas, copses, old fruit trees, meadows, and ponds. This varied landscape provides a contrast to a single protected building. The village’s history, its monument, and the natural landscape offer different highlights to help you plan your visit to Petkovy.
Cycling routes and route planning
A cycling route between Petkovy and Lhotky passes by the Čížovky Nature Park. A described cycling tour is 22.1 km long in total. It runs from Dolní Bousov along Route No. 8148 to Rohatsko and Svobodín, then along Route No. 8147 through Petkovy, Lhotky, Kobylnice, and Ledce to Jabkenice. The tour passes through gently hilly, wooded countryside.
When planning, it is important to note what the distance refers to: 22.1 km is the length of the entire described tour, not just the section through Petkovy. The cycling route by the nature park and the full tour therefore offer different points of reference: one indicates the location between Petkovy and Lhotky, while the other gives the length and route of the longer ride. Routes and surface conditions may change, so check the current route and conditions before setting off.
