Písková Lhota and the Písková Lhota–Zámostí area offer several distinct highlights for a trip focused on history and culture. These include the Starý Stránov castle ruins, the Jewish cemetery, several registered cultural monuments, and the Písková Lhota–Zámostí nature trail. The sites differ both in their historical context and in their locations. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between a circular route with a fixed start and end point and visits to individual monuments.

Castle ruins on the banks of the Jizera

Starý Stránov stands on a rocky promontory on the left bank of the Jizera, above the settlement of Zámostí near Písková Lhota. This location connects the rocky promontory with the riverbank and the settlement below, giving the castle ruins a clear geographical setting. The castle ruins date from the 13th to the 15th century and are classified as an important archaeological site in Písková Lhota. These two classifications offer different points of interest: the ruins are the focus as a structure, while the classification highlights the archaeological significance of Starý Stránov.

Jewish cemetery and historic sites

The Jewish cemetery lies on the steep slope below the former Starý Stránov fortress, in the Písková Lhota–Zámostí area. The Baroque cemetery complex dates from around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries and served several Jewish communities in the surrounding area. Alongside the castle ruins, it offers a distinct historical focus: the cemetery’s architecture and its role in serving several communities. The cemetery can be reached from the east via a local municipal road. Check the condition of the site before your visit.

Hradiště nad Vlčím dolem is a registered immovable cultural monument in a forest about 1 km south of Písková Lhota. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk is also a registered immovable cultural monument. It stands in a field 200 m north of the settlement and about 70 m from road 11/610. The wayside shrine, also a registered immovable cultural monument, is in a field about 10 m from a farm track. The track runs south from road 1/16 before crossing road 11/610. The locations therefore have different reference points: the settlement and road 11/610 help orient you to the statue, while the farm track between the two roads provides a reference for the wayside shrine.

Písková Lhota–Zámostí nature trail

The nature trail offers a different way to explore from visiting the separately located monuments. It is an easy 5 km circular route with a spur. The start and finish are at the Písková Lhota municipal office. Ten stops with information panels and interactive features line the route. Its length, difficulty rating, and fixed start and end point give you a specific framework for planning this walk. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.

One distinction is important when planning your trip: the nature trail offers a clearly defined loop, while visits to individual cultural monuments focus on their respective histories and locations. You can therefore plan your visit around either a route with ten stops or specific historic sites. The rocky promontory, cemetery slope, forest, and fields each provide a different geographical setting for exploring the cultural heritage of Písková Lhota and Zámostí.
