Slaný: Experience city history and nature
Accommodation in Slaný
Slaný combines city history with sacred architecture and a nature theme shaped by geology. For planning your trip, you can consider these highlights separately: the historic centre tells the story of the city and its fortifications, while the Slánská hora educational trail offers a geological perspective. When looking for a hotel in Slaný, you can first consider which theme you want your trip to focus on. Churches and an astronomical observatory add further cultural highlights.
City History and the Conservation Area
The historic centre of Slaný has been an urban conservation area since 1992. The regional museum has permanent exhibitions on the history of the city and its surroundings. Slaný therefore offers two perspectives on the past: the museum covers the city and region, while individual buildings bring the history of the fortifications to life.
The Velvarská Gate is the only surviving gate of Slaný’s city fortifications. The fortifications were built in pre-Hussite times, between the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 15th century. A new exhibition about the city fortifications opened at the Velvarská Gate in 2021. This exhibition has a narrower focus than the regional museum’s permanent exhibitions: it deals specifically with the fortifications and their history.
Churches and Astronomy
In cooperation with the Slaný Information Centre, the church of the monastery of the Discalced Carmelites offers guided tours. Individual visits can be arranged for groups. At St. Gothard, public access is intended for personal prayer and sightseeing: since September 2021, volunteers from Farní charita Slaný have worked with the Roman Catholic parish of Slaný to ensure public access. St. Gothard is an important Gothic monument. The types of visits therefore differ: guided tours and arranged group visits are available at the monastery church, while prayer and sightseeing are stated purposes of public access at St. Gothard.
Another highlight is the Jaroslav Trnka Observatory. Its main focus is promoting astronomy. For travellers interested in astronomy as well as historic buildings, this offers a different way to explore Slaný’s culture.
Slánská hora: Natural Monument and Educational Trail
Slánská hora has been protected as a natural monument since 1 February 1998. The aim is to preserve a geological phenomenon at one of the southernmost outliers of volcanic activity in the České středohoří. Characteristic features include columnar jointing and numerous fissure caves. The Slánská hora educational trail runs through the natural monument and its protected area, making this natural landscape a distinct theme for your trip.
According to the route described in 2025, the educational trail starts on Chadalíkova Street and passes a tunnel and a cave. Its second viewpoint offers a view of Slaný’s historic centre. The trail therefore takes in both specific geological features and a view of the city. If you want to weigh culture against nature when planning your trip, Slaný offers clearly distinct themes: fortifications and a conservation area on the one hand, and a protected area with geological formations on the other.
Seasonal Travel on the Cyklohráček
In the 2026 season, the Cyklohráček excursion train runs on its current route from Praha-Bubny station to Slaný. If you plan to use this seasonal connection for your trip, check the timetable before travelling. Alongside the cultural and geological highlights, this train connection may also be a factor when planning your stay.
