For a stay in Kotopeky, several cultural highlights can be distinguished: the Chapel of St. Wenceslas in the village centre, the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk in Tihava, historic traces in the landscape and distinctive architectural forms.

Chapels and Distinctive Architectural Forms

The Chapel of St. Wenceslas stands in the centre of Kotopeky and was built on the village green in 1823. Its location and construction date link it to a specific place in the village and a clearly defined historical period. Masses are occasionally held there. If you would like to attend a service, check the current times in advance.

The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk is in the Tihava district, on an island in the middle of a small pond. It has an almost square ground plan and is built of stone and brick; it has also been reconstructed. Unlike the Chapel of St. Wenceslas, the focus here is not on the village green but on its setting on the pond island. The ground plan and materials add specific architectural features to this distinctive location.

The Válcovna is a single-storey brick building with a stone base and a hipped roof. It stands on the road from Kotopeky. A hipped roof has sloping surfaces on all sides. Together with the stone base and brick construction, this creates a specific combination of roof shape and materials. The Válcovna complements the chapels with a different type of building and offers another point of interest if you are interested in the village’s architectural forms.

Historical Traces in Kotopeky and Tihava

The former castle site “Na baště” in Tihava survives as the remains of a ditch. The other ditches of the fortress were probably supplied with water from there. This brings together a surviving trace in the landscape and a probable historical explanation of its function. The uncertainty concerns the former water supply for the other ditches.

The Kotopeky barrow cemetery comprises 14 barrows; the attribution of some of them is uncertain. It adds an archaeological dimension to the architectural and historical themes. The number and the qualification go together: some of the barrows cannot be attributed with certainty.

A cycle path and a field track run along the eastern side of Kotopeky; there are also drainage ditches there. If you plan to use the cycle path, check its condition in advance, as route conditions can change. The cycle path is the specific option to consider when planning a trip by bike; the field track and ditches are also features of this side of the village.

When choosing a hotel, the emphasis of your visit may be decisive: the chapels and the Válcovna offer a focus on architectural forms, while “Na baště” and the barrow cemetery draw attention to historical traces in the landscape. This makes it possible to include Kotopeky’s different cultural points of interest in your plans for your stay.
