Discover Skřipel
Accommodation in Skřipel
Skřipel can be explored through several distinct themes: late Baroque local architecture, a protected chestnut avenue and archaeological history. Walking circuits and a cycling route through the town add to these perspectives. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Skřipel, the church, avenue and trails offer different starting points for planning your day.
Protected Chestnut Avenue
Skřipelská alej is designated as a protected tree avenue; it was first designated on January 1, 1987. Only horse chestnut trees (Aesculus hippocastanum) grow along the avenue. It runs west from Osov Castle towards Skřipel. For a trip focused on landscape and nature conservation, its protected status and specifically identified tree species offer a distinct point of interest.
Church and Local History
The Church of St. Simon and Jude is a small late Baroque building in the centre of Skřipel, beside the road. Its architectural form and location provide a landmark for the town. Before 1232, the Ostrov Monastery held the right of presentation to the church in Skřipel. It therefore connects a late Baroque architectural style with an ecclesiastical legal relationship dating from before 1232.
Archaeological Traces
Šance is a significant archaeological site in the cadastral area of Skřipel, southeast of the town in the locality of U Šancí. The site comprises square earthwork enclosures covering an area of 105 × 125 metres; their interior lies about one metre higher than the surrounding terrain. Their shape, area and relative elevation make the site easier to picture, while its former function remains uncertain. It may have been a Celtic sanctuary or a fortification from a historical period.
Another archaeological site is Skřipel 5, 500 metres southwest of the town on the right bank of the Šiberna. The area is associated with prehistoric agriculture; archaeological finds have been documented there or are reasonably suspected to be present. In contrast, the particular interest of Šance lies in the unresolved question of the earthwork enclosure’s function, while Skřipel 5 is notable for its connection to prehistoric agriculture and its archaeological finds.
Walking Trails and Cycling Tours
The Podbrdský Čtyřlístek comprises four colour-marked circular walking routes. They pass through Skřipel and the surrounding towns of Lážovice, Vižina and Velký Chlumec, meeting in the centre of Osov. Each route is 6–8 km long, and they are intended primarily for walkers. When choosing a route, you can consider both its circular format and the stated distance. Riding them on trekking bikes or, preferably, mountain bikes is also an option; check current riding conditions before setting out.
The “Vyjížďka za legendárním Horymírem” cycling tour follows the protected chestnut avenue to Skřipel, then passes through the town and returns to Hostomice railway station via road II/115. For planning your day, the options differ mainly in format: four marked walking circuits with stated distances, and a cycling tour that follows the avenue and returns to the railway station.
