Nový Jáchymov: History and Landscape
Accommodation in Nový Jáchymov
Nový Jáchymov combines a local history shaped by ironworking with cultural monuments and a protected landscape. The municipality lies in the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area, which is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Several highlights can help you plan your trip: industrial history, the Lesní hřbitov cemetery, cycling, a nature trail, and bodies of water. Consider whether your stay will focus mainly on local history or on activities in the landscape.
The Iron Industry and the Cech Building
The municipality of Nový Jáchymov was founded in 1810. Its establishment was prompted by the construction of an ironworks with blast furnaces, a foundry, and auxiliary facilities. Ironworking thus lies at the beginning of the town’s history and provides an important context for its older architectural and mining heritage.
The Cech was built in 1812 in the Italian style and served as the entrance to an iron ore mine. The walls on either side of the Cech reveal a geological cross-section of Krušná hora, as well as the dip and thickness of the ore seams. The former Cech building, once known as the cáchovna, now serves as a restaurant. If you plan to dine there, check in advance whether it is currently open to visitors.
The Lesní hřbitov Cemetery and Its Monuments
The Lesní hřbitov Nový Jáchymov cemetery was established in 1831 on the initiative of František Nittinger and is a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It is still used for burials and is freely accessible to the public. If you plan to visit the cemetery for a specific occasion, check access arrangements beforehand.
Many graves are adorned with elaborately designed crosses and tombstones. A large cast-iron cross with a corpus stands in the central area. In a small valley, the A. Mayer family burial site forms a distinct group of four monuments. These include a central neo-Gothic cast-iron monument to Antonín Mayer and his wife, Johanna Mayerová, née Rumplerová. The cemetery offers visitors both a range of grave designs and a clearly defined family ensemble to use as a landmark.
Cycling Route, Nature Trail, and Bodies of Water
Marked cycling route 0053 (Pod Kolnou–Otročiněves) runs through the Nový Jáchymov area. Nearby, the Naučná stezka Krušná hora–Hudlický vrch nature trail leads to the Máminka observation tower. The cycling route passes through the municipality, while the observation tower is a specific destination along the nature trail. These are two distinct options to consider when planning an outing. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike.
The Habrový potok stream flows along the edge of the municipality, where a cascade of three ponds has formed. Fishing is permitted in the Prostřední pond, within the cadastral area of Nový Jáchymov. However, fishing is prohibited from the dam and in the spawning area. As a rule, only a single hook is permitted; this restriction does not apply to spinning. Local fishing rules may change, so check them before fishing.
