If you’re looking for a hotel in Malá Víska, it’s worth first asking what particularly interests you about the area: the rock landscape and views from Jindřichova skála, or the history surrounding Valdek and the CE “Jordán” facility. Marked trails, geological features and historical dates provide concrete reference points for this choice.

Rock landscape and local nature

Jindřichova skála is designated as a small nature reserve in the Mittelbrdy Hills. The rock face reaches a height of up to 21 metres; below it lies a sea of rocks made of Cambrian conglomerates. “Up to 21 metres” refers to the maximum height, not a uniform height across the entire rock face. For nature lovers, both the striking rock formation and its distinctive geological description are part of what makes this place special.

Several endangered lichen species that prefer sunny scree slopes grow at Jindřichova skála. So the focus is not only on the rock face: these lichens’ habitat is also a notable feature of the natural environment around the rocks. Those interested in protected landscapes will find a clear connection here between the rock, the location and rare species.

A stream flows through Malá Víska. It rises at the “Belu” forest spring, which lies about 300 metres south of the village. The approximate distance and southern direction provide a simple guide to the spring, while ensuring the description of the area isn’t limited to its rocky landscape.

Trails to the viewpoint and Valdek

A marked hiking trail leads from Malá Víska to the Jindřichova skála viewpoint. From there, you can look across the valley of the Červený potok towards Valdek Castle. The view combines the rocky landscape with a wide vista across the valley and towards the castle. Valdek itself has a different starting point: from a car park in Neřežín, the ruins can be reached by a marked footpath of less than two kilometres.

The two trail descriptions can be distinguished by destination and starting point: the marked hiking trail from Malá Víska leads to the viewpoint, while the footpath from Neřežín leads to the ruins of Valdek. When planning your route, check the latest route information before setting out, as trail conditions can change. The stated distance to Valdek is a route distance, not a walking time.

History between settlement and ruins

Malá Víska originally began as a settlement of woodcutters and charcoal burners. They worked in the forests of the Hořovice estate for the Komárov ironworks. The first written mention of the village dates to 1520. Taken together, these details offer insight into the settlement’s early working history and its first written record.

Valdek, a castle ruin with archaeological remains, lies in the vicinity of Malá Víska. Valdek was already described as dilapidated in 1623. This date refers to its historical status; it does not describe whether the ruins are accessible today. In Malá Víska, then, Valdek’s views and history come together in different ways: in the view across the valley and in the castle’s recorded historical classification.

The CE “Jordán” facility was built in 1936. It is a prototype structure that has been preserved practically in its original condition and is considered an important testament to the military history of the Czechoslovak Republic. This facility adds a distinct historical focus to the settlement’s older history and the castle ruins.
