Kolín District: Culture, History and Nature
Accommodation in Kolín District
Kolín District can be explored through a wide range of themes: collections on the history of Kouřim and Kolín, Renaissance architecture, landscapes along the Elbe and winemaking traditions. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first identify the main focus of your trip and then check connections to the places you want to visit. This lets you plan your stay around whether museums, architectural history, nature or wine are your priorities.
Museums and architectural history
The Kouřim Region Museum presents material on the Slavic, medieval and later history of Kouřim and the region. A long-term exhibition is devoted to the early medieval hillfort of Stará Kouřim. It includes a multimedia zone featuring the documentaries Objevená Kouřim and Za tajemstvím tismického zlatníka. Check before arriving whether the exhibition and films are available. The Kouřim Open-Air Museum of Folk Architecture offers a different perspective on history, presenting monuments of folk architecture from Central, Eastern and Northern Bohemia. Its ethnographic programmes showcase traditional celebrations throughout the year; individual dates vary.
In Kolín, the city centre is designated an urban conservation area. Notable buildings include the Gothic Church of St. Bartholomew, a national cultural monument, as well as the old Jewish synagogue and cemetery, which are significant cultural monuments. At Veigertovský House, a permanent historical exhibition traces Kolín’s development from its founding in the mid-13th century to the mid-19th century. Its exhibits include a charter issued by Přemysl Otakar II in 1261, considered the oldest surviving mention of Kolín. An exhibition in the Gothic cellars follows the house’s historical and architectural development from the 13th to the 21st century. Natural history is also represented: an insect exhibition introduces nine basic biotopes of the Kolín region and their insect inhabitants.
Renaissance Radim Castle survives as a manor house and features distinctive Saxon Renaissance architecture. In Kouřim, the town fortifications, a national cultural monument, recall the town’s building history. Two memorial sites mark other historical events: the hill above Lipany commemorates the 1434 Battle of Lipany; a monument at Bedřichov commemorates the Battle of Kolín.
Floodplain landscapes and views
Žehuň Pond is a national natural monument. The Libický luh Nature Reserve extends into Kolín District and forms Bohemia’s largest continuous complex of floodplain forest. At Veltrubský luh, Elbe oxbow lakes with varying water depths and floodplain forests with their original tree composition are protected. The habitat of the fire-bellied toad is also protected there. Near Stará Kouřim, Libušino jezírko is fed by a spring.
For views across the Polabí Lowland, the route to Bedřichova vyhlídka climbs 66 steps; in clear weather, the view extends across the lowland. The car park is about 250 metres from the observation tower. This distance is a guide for planning, while visibility depends on the weather.
Wine traditions and regional experiences
In 2017, Vinařství Klučov revived a local winemaking tradition and established a modern winery with a large tasting cellar. It cultivates the three vineyards Šutrák, Velká vinice and Malá vinice. Its wines carry the POLABÍ regional product certification. Guided tastings are offered at the winery or at NeVinný bar in Kolín; a guided tasting at the winery includes eight wines from the Klučov vineyards. As tasting options may change, it is advisable to check what is currently available before your trip.
The traditional Klučov wine festivals Hroznová koza and Zarážání hory also bring together wine, food and folklore; dates may vary. The Kudrnáč educational trail runs through the vineyards and past sites connected with an ancient hillfort. Check the signage and access before your visit.
Planning guidance
The Prague–Kolín–Česká Třebová railway line, operating as routes 010 and 011, crosses Kolín District and is part of the Czech transport corridors. From Zásmuky, you can take a bus back to Kouřim or continue towards Bečváry or Český Brod to reach rail connections. Check current services before travelling. A cycling trip from Kolín to Kutná Hora can be reached by train from Kolín and follows EuroVelo 4 towards Kutná Hora; check current train services and cycling conditions for this route too. These different travel plans can help you choose the right focus for your accommodation: town history, exhibitions, nature or wine.
