Dolní Chvatliny: Church, Festivals and Musical Tradition
Accommodation in Dolní Chvatliny
When choosing a destination, specific cultural and historical themes can be more important than a general description of a place. Dolní Chvatliny offers several distinct points of interest: the Church of St Peter and St Paul, the traces of the fortress in the terrain, and a long-standing brass band tradition. The Voděradský Stream and a memorial at the former school add to this picture.
The Church and the History of the Fortress
The present-day Church of St Peter and St Paul was completed in 1828. It is listed under number 23339/2–720 in the Central Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. The construction date and the heritage listing are two distinct points of reference: the year marks the completion of the present-day church building, while the number identifies its register entry.
Only an overgrown mound remains of the Dolní Chvatliny fortress. A ditch and rampart set it apart from its surroundings as a small rise in the terrain. The site is on the eastern edge of the town, to the left of the road to Bečváry; it is still known as Na Zámečku. The fortress was probably built in the second half of the 14th century, during the time of Vavřinec z Mlékovic or his sons Soběn and Vesel. The contrast with the church, completed in 1828, places the two historical landmarks in different eras.
Music and Local Remembrance
The Velký dechový orchestr Kolín – Dolní Chvatliny has a tradition spanning more than a hundred years. Together with the Městská hudba Františka Kmocha, the orchestra was instrumental in the beginnings of the Kmochův Kolín festival. The town’s history thus connects a long-standing musical tradition with the creation of a named festival. For travellers who want to experience culture through more than architecture, music offers a distinct perspective on the town’s cultural history.
The memorial plaque to the war victims of Dolní Chvatliny is on the building of the former school No. 26. Dolní Chvatliny is also situated on the Voděradský Stream. The plaque marks a specific place of remembrance, while the stream is a geographical point of reference for the town.
Planning a Visit to the Zahradní železnice Zásmucka
The Zahradní železnice Zásmucka was built on private land in the municipality of Horní Chvatliny. It has track gauges of 300 mm and 127 mm, a difference of 173 mm. The two measurements indicate the distance between the rails and give the railway a specific technical feature. When visiting, be sure to check the access arrangements: visits are possible on public operating days or by prior arrangement for larger organised groups.
The dates of public operating days vary, so check the specific dates before your trip. Larger organised groups can arrange a private visit. This requires prior coordination, and the visit depends on the owners’ availability. These conditions help you distinguish between a public operating day and an arranged group visit before including the railway in your travel plans.
