For a trip to Kněžice, you can weigh cultural history, nature and specific leisure interests. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul represents late Baroque architecture with an older ecclesiastical history; the Žlunice–Skochovice Natura 2000 site features woodland complexes in gently rolling terrain. Sport fishing is established at Osecký Pond, while cycle route No. 144 places the village on a longer route. If you are looking for accommodation, these different themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.

A church with a late Baroque appearance

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is listed as an immovable cultural monument within the administrative area of the municipality of Kněžice. Its present late Baroque appearance dates from a reconstruction carried out between 1774 and 1777. Its architectural features include a semicircular apse and a prismatic tower. The apse is the liturgical choir area; its rounded form provides a clear contrast with the tower’s prismatic shape. The church can therefore be understood both through its period of construction and through its specific architectural forms.

The church’s history stretches back further than this reconstruction: in 1359, the priest Jan Dobrohost of Turnov was appointed to the church. This date concerns a member of the clergy, whereas the years 1774 to 1777 mark the church’s present architectural form. The church was formerly a parish church and is now a branch church of the parish of Městec Králové. Its historical context thus spans several periods: early ecclesiastical history, late Baroque alterations and its present parish affiliation.

Woodland landscape and Natura 2000

The Žlunice–Skochovice Site of Community Importance extends into the administrative area of the municipality of Kněžice. The Natura 2000 site associated with Kněžice comprises two elongated woodland complexes in gently rolling terrain. The habitats recorded there include Eurosiberian steppe oak woods, oak-hornbeam forests of the Galio-Carpinetum association, and old acidophilous oak woods with pedunculate oak on sandy plains. The natural setting is defined both by its terrain and by its varied woodland types. If you want to include nature in your travel plans, this landscape offers a distinct focus alongside the ecclesiastical heritage.

Sport fishing and cycle route

Osecký Pond is a five-hectare sport fishing pond in the cadastral area of Kněžice. Sport fishing began there in mid-2008. Fishing is subject to local regulations and permits; check the current permit requirements before fishing. If sport fishing is one of your interests, you can take the pond into account as a specific point of interest when planning your leisure activities.

Cycle route No. 144 runs from Křinec via Nový Bydžov to Hrádek u Nechanic and reaches Kněžice at kilometre 16.60. This distance places the village along the route. Together with Osecký Pond, it offers two different points of interest for trip planning: a cycle route that includes Kněžice as a waypoint and a body of water where sport fishing takes place.
