Pátek is located in the Polabská Lowland, about three kilometers from the spa town of Poděbrady. The Sánský Canal runs through the built-up area of Pátek. Cycling from Poděbrady to Pátek takes only a few minutes; the exact time may vary depending on the route and conditions. For your trip planning, the lowland landscape, the history of water engineering and historic buildings come together here as distinct themes.

Waterscapes and historic mills

The Sánský Canal was built in the mid-15th century with the involvement of Jiří of Poděbrady to supply and drain the Poděbrady pond system. Its present course through the built-up area and its historic purpose tell two sides of the same waterscape. Here, supplying means bringing water in; draining refers to the complementary task of carrying water away again. The canal thus represents two interconnected tasks of historic water management. In places near Ostrov, Úmyslovice and Pátek, extensive depressions in the terrain and banks are reminders of the vanished Blato pond. These traces are spread across the three places mentioned and reveal the former pond as a shared landscape theme.

Nový mlýn mill was built in the 15th century between Odřepsy and Pátek on the left bank of the Sánský Canal. King Jiří gave the mill to his wife, Kunhuta. The Nové Mlýny complex is located on State Road 32, which follows the old route from Poděbrady to Jičín. Its present-day appearance, with buildings arranged around a square courtyard, took shape during extensive renovations at the end of the 19th century. The timeline thus spans from the 15th-century mill to the complex’s transformation in the late 19th century.

Church, ponds and open-air center

The Church of St. Vavřinec in Pátek is a subsidiary church of the Roman Catholic parish of Poděbrady. Ponds adjoining Lazarův mlýn are reminders of the significant tradition of pond farming in Bohemia. A walk across a meadow leads to Lazarův mlýn. You can hear a frog chorus from Hliňák pond.

The Hydrogeopark Pátek is a hydrogeological open-air center in the northeast of Pátek. It provides its own meteorological measurements via a mobile app and stores the data in an archive. If you want to use the readings for your planning, check in advance whether the app is available.

Summer events and trip planning

Pátecká Šipka is an annual series of summer darts tournaments. The 2026 announcement states that participation is open to everyone; registration as a darts player was not required. For later visits, check the dates and venue again. The 2026 announcement also mentions the traditional Rybářský čtyřboj, which combines fishing with target throwing and shooting.

For a visit tied to a specific occasion, the distinction in timing is relevant: the canal, mills and traces in the terrain point to the history of the town and landscape; the tournaments, by contrast, depend on the specific summer dates.
