Chroustov offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: the late Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Na Kostelíku hill, views across the Polabí region and local legends. There are also recurring church events and a hall for rent at the municipal inn. When choosing your destination, you can weigh up the landscape, architectural history, religious events and local traditions.

Landscape and Traditions on Na Kostelíku

Na Kostelíku hill reaches almost 300 metres above sea level. A new cross has replaced an older stone cross there. According to an old legend, the wooded hill was the site of Chroustov’s original settlement and an earlier church. The tradition thus links the hill with the early history of the village.

From Chroustov, the view stretches across the fertile Polabí region and as far as the distant border mountains in northern Bohemia. The panorama therefore takes in both the Polabí and a far-off mountain landscape. If you value expansive views when planning a trip, this is a distinct consideration alongside the local architectural and legendary attractions.

The Church, Local History and Events

Chroustov’s history dates back to the 12th century. The present Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary represents a much later period: it is late Baroque and was built as a completely new structure between 1781 and around 1785. The long history of the village and the construction period of the present church building thus belong to different periods.

Since 26 December 2010, Christmas concerts, pilgrimage Masses and church dedication Masses have been held regularly in the church. These are different occasions to consider when planning your trip: the concerts are associated with Christmas, while pilgrimage and church dedication Masses are other religious events. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the specific date in advance.

Legends by the Road and at the Well

An old sandstone statue of Saint Norburka, holding a sickle, stands in the fields along the road to Kněžice. A local legend links the statue to a sickle that supposedly remained suspended in mid-air. The statue and its associated story are thus linked to this motif; the levitation is part of the legend.

The “živá studně” well in Chroustov is also associated with a legend, in this case one about the White Lady. The two motifs are distinct: the sickle is central to the Norburka story, while the well is linked to the tale of the White Lady. For travellers interested in local traditions, Chroustov thus offers two different legendary motifs at named locations.

Practical Information for Your Stay
