Kladno offers several clearly distinct ways to explore its history: the conversion of a castle, regional museum collections, and educational trails about steel and coal production. The Church of St. Nicholas combines historicist styles, Art Nouveau and modernism; Sletiště also has sports facilities. When planning a stay, you can choose between a museum visit, a themed route and outdoor activities—the relevant opening hours and terms of use vary.

Castle History and Churches

Kladno Castle was extensively remodelled from 1737 to 1740 on the site of a medieval fortress, following a design by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. The remodelling was carried out for Břevnov Monastery. The Chapel of St. Lawrence is built into one of the castle’s four wings. Completed in 1740, it is oval-shaped and has a domed vault. The chapel is considered the most historically valuable part of Kladno Castle.

The Church of St. Nicholas in Kladno provides a different architectural focal point. This two-aisled, unoriented building has a striking, dominant tower dating from 1912 and 1913; its design combines historicist styles, Art Nouveau and modernism. Since 5 April 2022, the church has been protected as a cultural monument. A service is held every Sunday at 8:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Wenceslas in Kladno-Rozdělov. If you are planning a visit specifically for this, check the current service time.

Museums and Their Specialties

The Sládeček Regional Museum focuses on the regional history, ethnography and natural environment of the Kladno area. A special collection on mining and metallurgy is a particular highlight. Other collection areas include geology, archaeology and numismatics, as well as historic furniture, guild objects and commemorative documents. The collections also include items connected with the demolished Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Visitors who want to learn about Kladno not only through its buildings, but also through regional daily life, nature and industrial history, will find several different areas of interest here.

The Kladno Tower Block Museum is open to the public on Saturdays year-round. The 90-minute guided tours start at set times and must be booked; check the current schedule before your visit. Tours include the entrance hall, an exhibition and a model apartment, as well as a view from the roof terrace and visits to civil defence bunkers. The experience therefore combines insights into living spaces and an exhibition with additional stops in the building.

Educational Trails on Industrial and Mining History

The Vojtěšská Ironworks educational trail is about 2.5 kilometres long and has five stops. It runs through the site of the former Koněv ironworks in Kladno and explores the history of the works and the main operational areas involved in steel production. The Po lesních cestách do historie dolování uhlí na Kladensku trail takes a different approach: it starts in Kladno-Vrapice at the Church of St. Nicholas and ends in Cvrčovice–Čabárna. Its subject is the history of coal mining in the Kladno coal basin. The route passes the remains of individual mines and the outcrop of the main Kladno coal seam, then continues to the Žraločí zuby Natural Monument. The trails thus differ primarily in their focus on steel production versus coal mining and in their respective routes.

Sports and Getting Around

Sletiště in Kladno offers specialist sports facilities and a large playground. The complex includes a floodlit inline skating track: a 560-metre asphalt circuit that is open to the public year-round and can be used without a reservation. From November to March, it is used at your own risk due to possible icy conditions. As terms of use may change, check them before making plans.

Individual routes and connections can also help you get around: cycle route 017 passes right by the Kladno Aquapark. From Kladno město railway station, you can reach the aquapark on foot via local streets in about ten minutes. The Kladno stop on bus route 605, named Aquapark, is opposite the main entrance to Sletiště and just a few steps from the entrance to Kladno Aquapark.
