Hvozdnice: Forests, Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Hvozdnice
Hvozdnice is a destination for travelers looking to combine a forested landscape, cycling and hiking trails, and historical connections in one municipality. The main activities for visitors are cycling and hiking. When choosing where to stay, you can first compare the landscape and specific trails; there are also distinct cultural attractions, including Husův dům and the history of Ostrov Benedictine Monastery.
Landscape and getting your bearings
Hvozdnice lies amid forests between the Kocába and Bojovský potok, in the Středočeská pahorkatina and, more specifically, the Brdy Mountains. There are four ponds within the municipality. At 397.3 meters above sea level, Babka is the highest point in the municipality. The main activities for visitors include cycling and hiking.
Hiking trails starting from Bojov
The yellow-marked trail leads from Bojov railway station along a forest path to Hvozdnice. From there, it continues through Hvozdy and Masečín to the Kocába, the settlement of Askalona, and then along the river to Štěchovice. The green-marked trail also starts at Bojov railway station but heads in a different direction: it leads to Dlouhé louky, past a holiday settlement and the villages of Sloup, and via Kejsíř to Davle. The routes differ mainly in their course and destination: the yellow trail first leads to Hvozdnice and then on to Štěchovice; the green trail goes via Dlouhé louky and Kejsíř to Davle.
Cycling and local history
The blue “Po stopách minulosti” cycling route passes through Hvozdnice. The “Modrý okruh” (Blue Circuit) passes through places of historical interest in the Mníšecký region.
The first written record of Hvozdnice’s existence is also the founding charter of Ostrov Benedictine Monastery. Historically, the settlement’s residents were obliged to supply the monastery with charcoal. The monastery is therefore part of the village’s history both as a subject of its earliest written record and as the recipient of a compulsory delivery.
Another historical landmark is Husův dům, a modernist parish building. It was built in 1929–1930 to a design by the Czech architect B. Kozák. A memorial to the victims of the First World War (1914–1918) and the Second World War (1939–1945) stands in front of the building. The building and memorial reflect different periods: the architecture of the interwar years and remembrance of both world wars.
Getting there and practical information
From Bojov railway station, Husův dům is 2 km away along the yellow-marked trail. This distance may be useful if you plan to include the building in your visit. Prague city bus route 314 serves the Hvozdnice stop. Before traveling, check the timetable for route 314 and train connections to Bojov. It is also advisable to check trail conditions before setting out on a hike.
