Úhonice: Churches, Cultural Monuments and Landscape
Accommodation in Úhonice
Two themes stand out when choosing Úhonice as a destination: a long ecclesiastical history and the landscape west of the village. When planning a stay, you can consider whether buildings and monuments or the surrounding landscape better match your travel interests.
Church and Historical Background
The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is a landmark of Úhonice visible from afar. Built between 1896 and 1898 in the Neo-Romanesque style to plans by Eduard Sochor, it replaced an older Gothic church dating from 1615. The local ecclesiastical history reaches back even further: in 1143, Úhonice was mentioned as a parish village near Unhošť. Since the Strahov Monastery was founded that same year, the village belonged to the monastery; its abbots established a parish church here before 1358. The chronology thus runs from the village’s mention as a parish and the founding of a parish church to the later building phases of 1615 and 1896–1898.
Next to the church is the Baroque cemetery chapel, dating from 1799. It adds another point to the chronology between the Gothic predecessor and the church built in the late 19th century. The church façade faces the Franciscan monastery in Hájek; this relationship is understood as a spiritual unity between the two places.
Visits and Time-Specific Events
For Noc kostelů (Church Night) on May 29, 2026, the church was open to visitors from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. The program at the time also included a guided tour of the church, tower and organ. If you are planning to attend a later edition, check its program: the times and tour details given here apply to that date.
Cultural Monuments in the Village
Another historic site is the Úhonice steam mill with its pond at No. 81, on Jenečská and Na Hrázi, which is designated an immovable cultural monument. The mill was established by Václav Klatovský around 1907; grain was milled there for forty years.
The niche chapel of Saint Florian is also designated an immovable cultural monument. Four notable trees are designated as protected memorial trees. The built-up area of Úhonice is also designated as a Category UAN I archaeological area, dating from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The history of the village therefore extends beyond individual buildings: local points of interest also include archaeological classification and protected trees.
Landscape and Getting There
If the landscape is more important to your choice of destination, head west. Extensive woodland lies in the western part of Úhonice’s area. West of the village, the varied landscape has pronounced relief and includes a valley leading toward the ponds. This perspective adds a different focus to the village’s history, which can be traced through building dates: woodland, terrain and valley.
