Županovice combines a long history with the VN Slapy - Županovice swimming area on the Vltava and the annual Malý županovický železný muž triathlon. Other attractions include pilgrimage Masses and the historic lock lying underwater. When planning a trip, you can choose between religious history, water-related attractions and a specific sporting event. The historical dates range from a deed of donation dated 1235 to the end of manorial rule in 1848.

Local history: deed, Anežka and the order

A deed of donation for Županovice is dated 12 February 1235. Anežka, abbess of the Poor Clare convent in Prague, retained Županovice for three years and then bequeathed the village to the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star at St. Francis in Prague. This order remained the lord of Županovice until the abolition of serfdom in 1848.

The dates mark distinct events: 1235 is the date of the deed of donation, and 1848 marks the end of manorial rule. There are 613 years between them. Anežka’s three-year connection to the village is a clearly defined stage in this sequence, followed by the order’s role as lord of the manor. This makes it possible to place the history in chronological context through a specific document, a person and the subsequent role of a religious institution.

Pilgrimage Masses in Županovice

A pilgrimage Mass was held in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit in Županovice. Pilgrimage Masses were also celebrated in the village on 24 May 2015, 28 May 2023 and 24 May 2026. A pilgrimage Mass combines a church service with a religious pilgrimage occasion. Its religious character distinguishes it from the sporting triathlon, which is also among the village’s event-related attractions.

Swimming area on the Vltava

The VN Slapy - Županovice swimming area is located in Županovice on the Vltava. The Slapy swimming area extends along the entire length of Županovice; access to the water slopes gently, though the shoreline can change depending on the water level. The extent of the area and the shape of the water entry are different points of reference: one describes how far the swimming area extends along the village, the other how you access the water. Water conditions can vary seasonally. If you are planning a day of swimming, check the seasonal conditions before your trip. This allows you to consider the general description of the area and the water conditions for your planned visit separately.

Historic lock and triathlon

Another water-related feature is the historic lock at Županovice, which lies underwater. It was 26.6 metres long and 4.7 metres wide. Its length is just under 5.7 times its width, illustrating the structure’s proportions. As a historic navigation lock, it is part of Županovice’s shipping history. The swimming area and the lock thus point to different aspects of the village: swimming by the water and navigation in the past.

The Malý županovický železný muž triathlon takes place every year. This amateur event is open to women, men and relay teams of all ages and ability levels. The format may change from one edition to the next. If you would like to include the triathlon in your travel plans, check the details of the next edition in advance.
