Počepice: Churches, Stations of the Cross and Cycle Route 8144
Accommodation in Počepice
Počepice combines ecclesiastical architectural history with sculptures and trails in the surrounding area. The most prominent landmark is the Church of St John the Baptist and its cemetery; other points of interest range from the rectory to the U svatých statue group. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the trails by type and route: in addition to the local Stations of the Cross, regional hiking and cycling routes also pass through Počepice.
Church and ecclesiastical architectural history
The Church of St John the Baptist and its cemetery are the most important landmark in Počepice. The church dates from the first half of the 14th century and has its origins in a Gothic building phase. In 1790, it was remodelled from Gothic to Baroque style. The building thus combines its medieval origins with a later Baroque transformation.
Rectory and chapel
The rectory is also part of the village's architectural history: it was built in 1775 by Ferdinand von Lobkowicz. The Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is located in the Počepice 29 rectory. It was blessed on 9 September 2017. Access is not barrier-free; take this limitation into account when planning your visit.
The U svatých statue group
The U svatých statue group is located on Road 105 towards Vysoký Chlumec, about 1.3 km from the village centre. It comprises statues of St Procopius and St John of Nepomuk. The older statue, that of St Procopius, dates from the second quarter of the 18th century; the statue of St John of Nepomuk was created after the middle of the 18th century. The dates place the two figures in different periods of the 18th century and give the visit an art-historical dimension.
Stations of the Cross and hiking routes
The Stations of the Cross begin near the Church of St John the Baptist and climb the southeastern slope of Radešín. They end at Kalvárie and offer views of Počepice and the surrounding countryside. The stone crosses along the route are decorated with pictures painted by children from a school in Sedlčany. The route thus combines a religious theme with a landscape perspective and distinctive artistic design. If you plan to follow the Stations of the Cross, check the route locally before setting out, as trail conditions can change.
Another hiking route also passes through Počepice: the Sedlčany Robin hiking route heads towards Prčice. It is therefore distinct from the local Stations of the Cross, which end at Kalvárie. Comparing the routes helps with orientation: one is described as a Stations of the Cross route with a named endpoint, while the other is identified by its connection to Prčice.
Cycle route through Počepice
The 6 km cycle route 8144 runs from Veselíčko through Skuhrov and Počepice, as well as Vitín, to Skoupý. It connects Veselíčko, Počepice and Skoupý and links cycle routes 8139 and 8143. This places Počepice along a route that connects several places and designated cycle routes. The difference is clear when choosing between the routes: 8144 is a cycle route, whereas the Sedlčany Robin route is a hiking trail leading to Prčice.
A connection to film history
Film history is also part of the village's cultural heritage: the film Farářův konec, starring Vlastimil Brodský, was shot in Počepice. For travellers interested in film, this adds another perspective on Počepice alongside its architecture and sculpture.
