Chýně: Historical Traces and Paths by the Water
Accommodation in Chýně
Chýně combines historical traces with bodies of water, paths and events. Strahovský rybník reflects the area’s long history, a landscaped site and links to leisure and events. The Cesta Třetí skála adds a specifically described path, intended mainly for pedestrians and cyclists.
Historical Traces in Chýně
The first written record of Chýně dates from 1273 and identifies the place as property of the Strahov Monastery. The Premonstratensians owned Chýně almost continuously, with the exception of brief periods during the Hussite Wars, after the Battle of White Mountain and during communist nationalisation. A Celtic sunken-featured building was discovered in Chýně in 2011. The place is particularly known for its iron-smelting furnaces. Written records, the history of ownership and archaeological topics offer different perspectives on the history of Chýně.
Ponds, Stream and Walks
The site of Strahovský rybník has historical roots dating back to 1410. The area around the pond was landscaped by building up embankments and surrounding land, planting shrubs and trees, mowing, cleaning and stocking it with fish. The aim was to create good living conditions for endangered animal species and to preserve and further develop the site’s natural yet park-like character. Litovický potok rises west of Chýně and flows through the Bašta pond within the cadastral area. The landscape around the stream is undergoing extensive restoration and reclamation; it also invites visitors to enjoy pleasant walks.
Paths and Events
Cesta Třetí skála is a short, surfaced field path. It was completed in 2024 and, at 537 metres long, is intended mainly for pedestrians and cyclists. The route connects the paved road between Chýně and Hájek with an unpaved path from Bašta pond. Chýňská padesátka took a different form: a recurring educational hike from the lowest to the highest point of the cadastral area. Its sixth edition took place in January 2018. The two descriptions differ in scale: a 537-metre path on the one hand, and a hike between the elevation points of the cadastral area on the other.
Pohoda FEST Chýně began in 2016 with a concert on the shore of Strahovský rybník and subsequently developed into a full-fledged festival. The “Chýňská pětka” running competition is also held at Strahovský rybník; check the event dates before your trip. Recreational fishing at the pond is non-commercial and mainly follows the “catch and release” principle. If you would like to take part, check the rules and access arrangements locally in advance.
Getting There and Practical Information
Bus routes 347 and 358 connect Chýně with Prague Metro Line B at Zličín station and Line A at Motol station. Check current connections before travelling. Pivovarský Dvůr Chýně is accessible by car and public transport. The restaurant has its own car park with space for more than 20 passenger cars; it can also accommodate a larger bus. If you are planning to visit with a larger group, confirm parking availability in advance.
