Visoko: Medieval Sites, Sacred Art and Ravne
Accommodation in Visoko
Visoko offers several distinct areas of interest for a stay: the medieval town of Visoki, sacred buildings and collections, and the Ravne complex. If you are looking for a hotel in Visoko, you can plan your trip around the subjects that interest you most: history, religious art and crafts, or the area of the Bosnian pyramids. The different historical interpretations and attractions make it easier to choose the focus of your stay.
Medieval town and archaeological site
Stari grad Visoki, the medieval town and fortress, was built on Visočica Hill in the 14th century and is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The historic site is located at an altitude of 766.5 metres, about 300 metres above the valley in which Visoko developed. The first documented mention of Visoki is also precisely dated: it appears in a charter issued by Ban Tvrtko on 1 September 1355.
Another way to explore medieval history is the archaeological site of Mili in Arnautovići, which is also a national monument. Mili was a site of gatherings of the Bosnian nobility, coronations, and the burial church of Bosnian rulers. The site comprises four architectural units from Late Antiquity, the Romanesque period, the Early Gothic period, and the later or High Gothic period. Tvrtko I Kotromanić was crowned at Mile in 1377. Alongside the fortified hilltop town, the focus is therefore also on the history of rulers and different architectural styles.
Sacred sites, art and crafts
The Tabhanska Mosque, also called the Tabačka Mosque, is a national monument. Tanners from Visoko built it in the first half of the 17th century, as the tanning trade expanded. Next to the mosque is a small harem where agas, ulemas and dervishes are buried; it too is designated a national monument.
The Church of Saint Procopius and its valuable collection of icons were declared national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2004. The collection includes works by Byzantine, Cretan, Russian and Venetian masters. Another architectural distinction links Visoko with Šerefudin’s White Mosque: it received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1983. Together, these sites offer a range of subjects, from the history of the tanning trade to sacred architecture and icon painting.
Local museum and gallery
The Local Museum displays traditional clothing, tools and household items. Its exhibition themes also include traditional crafts such as pottery and weaving. The UGLU Gallery Likum 76 holds exhibitions and events throughout the year featuring works by local and international artists; individual exhibitions may change. The museum therefore focuses on everyday objects and crafts, while the gallery centres on art and events.
Ravne complex and the Bosnian pyramids
The Valley of the Bosnian Pyramids in Visoko includes the Foundation’s museum. The Ravne complex offers archaeological, tourist and sports activities. Ravne 2 Archaeological and Tourist Park covers more than 100,000 square metres in Visoko. At the site of the Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun, the operator describes a regular pyramid geometry with three preserved sides: the north, east and west sides. The operator also describes the Ravne underground labyrinth as a prehistoric network of tunnels and chambers.
Individual and group tickets as well as guided tours are offered for the visitor area; the offer may change. A local notice dated 2 December 2025 stated that entry to the Ravne tunnels was with a guide. It also mentioned daily tours with an official Foundation guide, which could be booked one day in advance. If you are planning a tunnel visit, check before travelling whether this guide and booking arrangement is still in effect.
River landscape and surroundings
The Fojnica flows into the Bosna in Visoko at an altitude of 430 metres. Another landmark lies near the pyramid site: an artificial conical mound, or tumulus, is located in Vratnica, five kilometres away. These two geographical features complement the historical and cultural themes with a river landscape and another feature of the surrounding area.
