Zenica-Doboj Canton: Discover Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Zenica-Doboj Canton
The Tajan Protected Area is located near Zavidovići and Kakanj in Zenica-Doboj Canton and covers 4,948.35 hectares. It is a mountainous area with exceptional geological, biological and landscape diversity. If you would like to include nature and culture in your travel plans, there are several ways to do so: a large protected area, distinctive natural features and cultural and historical sites.
Tajan: Mountain Scenery and Activities
The many natural features include mountain peaks, gorges, caves and sinkholes, as well as stone bridges with caves. Rivers, lakes, waterfalls and karst springs complete the picture. Together, the varied geological formations and the area's biological and landscape diversity shape the character of this mountainous region.
Tajan is considered a popular destination for nature lovers and is associated with hiking, cycling and other outdoor activities. These different options can help you decide in advance whether you would like to focus your trip more on nature experiences, a hike or a cycling tour. Check local conditions and access before you travel.
Water, Forest and Trails
The shores of Jezero Mašica are densely forested, with designated walking paths, barbecue areas and shelters along the lakeshore. Alongside the mountain area, this offers a specific place by the water where you can take a walk or enjoy a break outdoors. As visitor facilities can change, check their condition locally before your visit.
Kamenica Waterfall can be reached from Zavidovići via a local road in the direction of the Tajan Natural Monument. The route is about 14 kilometres long. If you include Kamenica in your plans, you can use this approximate distance as a guide; also check local access options in advance.
Cultural History and Fortresses
Kraljevski grad Bobovac was built in the mid-14th century and served as the administrative and military centre of the Bosnian state. The Bosnian royal crown was also kept there. Its construction date, political role and the history of the crown offer three different ways to explore this historic site.
The library of FranjevaÄŤki samostan i crkva sv. Ive Krstitelja preserves a collection of 22 incunabula. The monastery and church are also a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. For those interested in cultural history, the library offers a different focus from Bobovac's architectural and state history: here, the emphasis is on a specific collection and the site's monument status.
The high walls and towers of Maglajska tvrđava-Gradina offer views of the town of Maglaj and the surrounding valley. Vranduk Fortress has been prepared for tourist visits. Check access arrangements before visiting either site, as conditions may change.
Dani kraljice Katarine adds its own cultural dimension. This traditional event has been held since 2008. If it interests you during your travel period, check the relevant event dates in advance.
