Zbilje can be explored through two distinct focal points: the “Visočka cvaja” route and a Neolithic archaeological site with distinctive pottery characteristics. The Planinarski dom Zbilje mountain lodge is also located in the area. Hiking and archaeological topics thus offer different perspectives. For travel planning, the route, mountain lodge and archaeological site each provide separate points of reference.

Hiking and Orientation

The Zbilje area is considered attractive for active recreation and walks. The “Visočka cvaja” runs along the mountain trails of Visoko and is 20 kilometres long. Its marked section through Zbilje ends at Planinarski dom Zbilje. This endpoint gives the section a specific local connection, while the 20 kilometres describe the route as a whole. This makes it possible to distinguish the total length from the section that runs through Zbilje.

On the route, you cross the Fojnica at Acetov most. A gravel path then follows the river to the village of Zbilje. The crossing, the riverside path and the village are specific reference points along the route described.

A description published in 2025 mentions coffee and grilled dishes or cooked meals at Planinarski dom Zbilje; ask about the current menu before visiting. Swimming at Planinarski dom Zbilje is described as a possibility during the summer months. Check locally whether swimming is possible at the time of your trip.

The Neolithic Archaeological Site

The Neolithic archaeological site of Zbilje covers a large area on elevated river terraces. Radiocarbon dating indicates use around 4692–4522 BC, with a probability of 95.4 percent. The site shows Vinča characteristics, particularly those of the Vinča-Pločnik phase.

Its pottery characteristics include a high proportion of fine pottery, as well as black and grey surface decorations. Typological links exist with Lisičić and northeastern Bosnia. The characteristics also indicate parallel developments at Obre II, associated with the final phase of the Butmir culture. These details show different levels of classification: Vinča-Pločnik represents the cultural characteristics given particular emphasis, while Lisičić, northeastern Bosnia and Obre II appear in the pottery comparisons.

The various details provide several ways to understand the site: its extent and terrace location describe its spatial setting, the radiocarbon dating provides its chronological context, and the pottery details offer typological comparisons. This makes it possible to understand the site both in terms of its landscape setting and its material characteristics.

Medieval Stećci

Zbilje is one of the places in the Visoko area with a necropolis of medieval stećci. Around 344 medieval tombstones, known as stećci, are assigned to necropolises in the municipality of Visoko. This number reflects the broader municipal context, while the necropolis establishes the local connection to Zbilje. Compared with the Neolithic archaeological site, the stećci belong to a much later, medieval period. Zbilje therefore brings together two distinct historical periods: the Neolithic use of the archaeological site and medieval funerary monuments.
