Stepanawan brings together a house museum dedicated to Shahumyan’s life, chapels, fortress remains and a named rafting route on the Dzoraget. Due to its climatic conditions, Stepanawan is considered one of Armenia’s resort areas. If you are looking for a hotel in Stepanawan, the different themes may influence your choice of destination: Are you mainly interested in the town’s history, nature or a river activity? The locations also differ: Some historic sites are in the center or on the western edge, while others are described as nearby.

Climate as a guide to when to travel

Stepanawan has a humid climate. The average temperature is −4.2 °C in January and +16.7 °C in June. These two monthly averages offer a seasonal guide, but are not a forecast for individual travel days. If you are weighing a stay in January against one in June, you can consider the different averages as climate context. Actual local conditions remain decisive for specific dates.

Nature focus: the arboretum near Gyulagarak

The Stepanawan Arboretum near Gyulagarak was founded in 1931 and covers 35 hectares. This includes 17.5 hectares of natural forest and 15 hectares planted with ornamental plants. More than 2,500 plant species have been tested there; 500 of them adapted to the region. These figures bring together several aspects of the site: its founding, the different areas and the diversity of plants tested. The arboretum is therefore a distinct nature and botany focus among the topics described here; it is located near Gyulagarak.

Shahumyan Museum and the town’s history

The Stepan Shahumyan House Museum was built around the house where Shahumyan grew up in Stepanawan. Visitors can learn more about his life and the town’s history there. The museum thus brings together a biographical subject and local history.

The collection comprises 1,646 exhibits, including archaeological objects excavated at regional monuments. They date from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. Alongside its biographical focus, the collection therefore also covers archaeological subjects from several periods. The collection may change over time.

Chapels and fortress remains in the town

The 13th-century Holy Saviour Chapel is in the center of Stepanawan. The remains of an ancient fortress, dated to the 3rd millennium BC, lie on the western edge of the town. These location details help distinguish the two historic sites: the chapel is centrally located, while the fortress remains are described as being on the western edge of town. Their dates also point to very different historical periods.

The St. Sign Chapel was built in 1871 and is located two kilometers from Stepanawan, on the road to Armanis. Unlike the Holy Saviour Chapel in the center, it is located outside the town. If you are interested in architectural history, comparing the three sites mentioned offers different points of reference: a chapel in the center, fortress remains on the western edge and another chapel on the road to Armanis.

Lori Berd and the Dzoraget rafting route

The historic and cultural reserve of Lori Berd lies near Stepanawan on a plateau bordered by the steep gorges of the Dzoraget and Miskhana rivers. This landscape description differs from the sites in the town center: here, the plateau and gorges shape the setting. Lori Fortress is another nearby historic site. It dates from the 11th century and lies about five kilometers from Stepanawan, near Lori Berd.

The rafting route on the Dzoraget offers a different kind of activity: it starts at the Dzoraget Bridge in Stepanawan. The service’s availability may vary. If rafting is important to your travel plans, check in advance whether the route is offered on your planned dates.
