Discover Lori: Monasteries, Forests and the Debed
Accommodation in Lori
Monasteries, historic fortresses and the Debed give Lori a distinctive character. Haghpat and Sanahin tell the story of medieval monastic history; forests, gorges and activities on the river offer further perspectives. Depending on whether you want to focus on history, landscapes or active pursuits, Lori offers a range of possibilities.
Monasteries and Historic Sites
Haghpat Monastery was founded in 976 by Queen Khosrovanush and built between the 10th and 13th centuries. In the Middle Ages, Haghpat was a flourishing cultural and intellectual center. The founding year and construction period offer two perspectives on time: the beginning of its history and a building phase that spanned several centuries.
Sanahin Monastery was built in the 10th century and is located in the village of Sanahin near Alaverdi. By comparison, the stated construction period for Haghpat extends into the 13th century. The World Heritage Trail in the northern province of Lori connects the monasteries of Sanahin and Haghpat. The “Sanahin to Haghpat Monasteries” hiking trail takes four hours, is 10.9 kilometers long and has a moderate difficulty level. These figures help you gauge the time required and the distance; check local conditions before setting out on the hike.
Akhtala also brings together a fortress and a monastery. The complex was founded in the 10th century; its colorful, well-preserved frescoes depict scenes from the New Testament. In Odzun, you can visit Odzun Church. In the village of Sanahin, the Mikoyan Brothers Museum displays a real MiG-21 fighter jet—a different historical point of reference from the region’s medieval monasteries and fortresses.
Lori Fortress was the center of the Kingdom of Tashir-Dzoraget. Its outer wall encloses 9 hectares. The fortress lies near the village of Lori Berd and is 5 kilometers from Stepanavan. This makes Stepanavan a useful geographical reference point for this historic site.
Landscapes and Active Experiences
Lori’s landscape includes dense forests, dramatic gorges and the picturesque Debed. More than 500 tree species from different parts of the world grow in Stepanavan Dendropark, including five California redwoods. The international diversity of the collection and the number of redwoods give the park a botanical character that clearly distinguishes it from the region’s historic sites.
On the Debed, Rafting Armenia takes participants through calm waters and rapids. Experienced instructors accompany the adventure. If you’re looking for an on-land challenge rather than a river activity, LORE Adventure Park in Stepanavan offers a challenging ropes course and climbing wall. The park is in Stepanavan; Lori Fortress is 5 kilometers away. These locations help you place the two different excursion destinations geographically, without treating their activities as the same.
In Lori, medieval history, botanical diversity and active pursuits come together. You can focus on the monasteries and historic sites, explore the landscape on a hike, or consider activities on the Debed and in Stepanavan.
