Alaverdi combines a long history of copper with art, museums and a striking location on the Debed River. Visitors staying in the city encounter several different themes: industrial history, the medieval history of Sanahin Monastery and the story of the Mikoyan brothers. The layout of the city districts also plays a role in finding your way around.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

The Tbilisi–Yerevan railway and the Tbilisi–Alaverdi–Yerevan road run through Alaverdi. For your specific journey, check the train schedule and current traffic conditions.

Alaverdi stretches across both banks of the Debed River. Because of the rugged and complex terrain, the city districts are quite far apart. If you are looking for a hotel in Alaverdi, take your specific destinations into account when choosing: the spread of the neighborhoods is a separate factor to consider when planning.

History, Art and Museums

Sanahin Monastery lies within the city limits of Alaverdi. Documentary evidence and material traces suggest that parts of the complex date from the mid-10th century. Historically, humanities and medicine were studied at the monastery, and scholarly treatises were also written there. The monastery's history therefore encompasses both its period of construction and its earlier role as a place of study and writing. Copper mining and processing have taken place in Alaverdi since antiquity and form another important historical focus of the town. Sanahin Bridge is a remarkable example of medieval secular architecture. Queen Vaneni had it built in the 12th century in memory of her late husband. The polished basalt arch is about 18.6 meters long and 3.3 meters wide.

The Mikoyan Brothers Museum in Sanahin, near Alaverdi, is dedicated to the lives of Anastas and Artem Mikoyan. A restored MiG-21 is the centerpiece of the open-air exhibition. The collection includes personal photographs, documents, uniforms, scale models and aviation exhibits. Biographical objects are displayed alongside aircraft and model-related exhibits, so a museum visit can be connected both with the brothers' history and with aviation.

The Alaverdi Art Gallery reopened in 2009 with the exhibition “Armenian Landscape.” It displays works by Seyran Khatlamajian, Arpenik Nalbandian, Lusik Agulec and Ruben Shahvedyan; which individual works are currently on display may change. The gallery and the Mikoyan Museum have different focuses: the former centers on works and artists, while the latter focuses on the brothers' biographies and aviation exhibits.
