Odzun has a clear focus on church architecture, complemented by opportunities for outdoor excursions. Odzun Church stands in the central part of the village, on a high plateau above the Debed Gorge. Its layout, Armenian inscriptions and older relief stones give a stay here a strong cultural focus. At the same time, described activities lead into the surrounding landscape: a hike begins at the temple, horseback rides are possible near Odzun and Dsegh, and there is also a nearby rafting activity on the Debed. You can therefore shape your stay around architectural and cultural history or outdoor activity.

Odzun Church: Space, Stone and Artwork

Two rows of pillars divide the prayer hall into three naves. An exterior gallery surrounds it on three sides and is considered a uniquely preserved example in Armenia. The naves form the interior layout, while the gallery provides an outer enclosure for the prayer hall. The church was built using dressed basalt and light-brown felsite. Numerous Armenian inscriptions appear on both the exterior and interior walls. A relief of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus is placed above the baptismal font. The layout, building stones, inscriptions and artwork each show different aspects of the church’s architecture.

Historic Buildings and Reliefs

Stylistically, Odzun Church is dated to the end of the 6th century. An unusual funerary monument from the 5th to 6th centuries stands directly beside it. Its carved pillars and reliefs depict biblical scenes and the Christianization of Armenia. Numerous older relief-carved stones are also preserved in the church walls; 25 of them are dated to the 4th century. The church is considered to be completely preserved, and reconstruction work has been carried out over time. At the southeastern edge of the village are also the ruins of the 5th-century Tziranavor-Tzaghkavank Basilica. The historic details are therefore spread across several structures: the church, the adjoining funerary monument and a basilica ruin at the edge of the village.

Hiking, Horseback Riding and Rafting

The Odzun–Horomayr–Kobayr trail is a 9 km linear route through the Lori Gorge. A hiking excursion begins at the temple in Odzun and reaches Nerkin Horomayr Monastery; it then continues to Kobayr Monastery. A stop at Verin Horomayr Monastery is also part of the excursion. Check local trail conditions before setting out. The stated route length is a specific reference point for your planning.

Horseback rides near Odzun and Dsegh range from a few hours to several days and offer views of the Debed Gorge. A nearby rafting activity on the Debed follows an 8 km hike. The rafting section runs from Tumanyan to Sanahin. The activities therefore vary in scope: the hiking route is listed as 9 km, horseback rides last from a few hours to several days, and rafting is preceded by an 8 km hike.

Views Over the Debed Gorge

Views of the gorge from the Odzun Plateau depend heavily on weather conditions. Wind and fast-moving clouds can affect the view. If you include the landscape in your plans, leave some flexibility rather than treating a clear, far-reaching view as a fixed part of your itinerary.
