Orikum: Lagoon, beach and ancient traces
Accommodation in Orikum
Orikum is a coastal settlement whose life is connected with the sea, fishing and traditional agriculture. Olive trees and vineyards are part of this agricultural landscape. This gives you several themes to consider when planning your trip: the coastal landscape, nature around the lagoon, the beach and the history of ancient Orikum. There is also Marmiroi Church and a route from there to Bristan Bay.
Nature and birdwatching at the lagoon
The Orikum Lagoon lies on the coast of the Bay of Vlora, near the town of Orikum. It is part of the Karaburun Managed Nature Reserve and is designated an Important Bird Area (IBA). Visitors can watch birds there with binoculars, especially in spring and autumn during migration. The seasons provide a clear timeframe for nature observation: birdwatching is particularly highlighted during these migration periods.
You can also walk and take photographs along the shore. Thus, alongside observing birdlife, activities right by the lagoon shore are a focus. If you plan your trip around your interests, you can choose between focusing on bird migration and spending time walking or taking photographs.
Ancient Orikum and Marmiroi Church
The ancient city of Orikum, also known as Orikos, was founded around the 6th century BC. Orikum Archaeological Park lies between the sea and the Karaburun Mountains. The ancient theatre in the park could accommodate about 500 to 600 spectators. Its approximate capacity gives the theatre a concrete scale alongside its location in the park.
The park also contains the ruins of a square monopteros building dating from the 3rd to 2nd century BC. A Late Antiquity tower stands on the eastern terrace. The dates help distinguish the remains chronologically: the city’s foundation is considerably earlier than the monopteros, while the tower belongs to a later period.
Marmiroi Church is another architectural and cultural-history highlight in Orikum. Built in the 12th century, it is legally protected as a cultural monument and visited by tourists. Its centrally vaulted construction and cruciform interior layout describe two different aspects of its architecture: the structure and the design of the interior.
A trail from Marmiroi Church to Bristan Bay is 8,170 metres long and has a stated duration of 1 hour and 50 minutes. It is rated moderate in difficulty. The trail lies in the Karaburun Managed Nature Reserve in Vlorë County. Its length, stated duration and difficulty rating offer different points of reference for planning. Route information may be updated; check trail conditions before setting out.
Orikum Beach
Orikum Beach is near the tourist marina. It has soft sand and a gently sloping entrance to the sea. These features describe the beach; seasonal conditions may vary. The beach can therefore be considered as a coastal attraction in its own right, alongside Orikum’s nature and cultural highlights.
