In Vlorë, protected coastal landscapes meet lagoons, islands and historic sites. The Karaburun–Sazan Marine National Park encompasses the Karaburun Peninsula, Sazan Island and the surrounding aquatic ecosystems. Its marine ecosystem is home to 36 marine species of international importance. The wealth of nature here shapes a wide range of experiences—from birdwatching at a lagoon to exploring the coast.

Lagoons and nature around Vlorë

Narta Lagoon is a protected natural area and an important habitat for waterbirds and wildlife. Visitors can watch birds, hike through nature and take part in educational activities there. Orikum Lagoon offers a different perspective on the landscape: it is designated an Important Bird Area, lies within the managed Karaburun protected area, and supports migratory birds, eels, fish and molluscs. You can watch birds there with binoculars, take a walk along the shore or take photographs. The ruins of the ancient city of Orikum are also located near the lagoon, offering an opportunity for a historical visit.

Zvërnec Forest lies in the western part of Bashkia Vlorë, next to Narta Lagoon, and is part of a protected coastal landscape. Nature trails invite visitors to hike, picnic and enjoy other outdoor activities. The forest can be reached via the Vlorë–Soda Forest–Zvërnec route. At Zvërnec Monastery, a wooden walkway connects the monastery island with the mainland; the walk is considered suitable for ecotourism and nature photography.

Sea, islands and coast

Diving, coastal exploration, wildlife watching and non-motorised sailing are permitted in Karaburun–Sazan Marine National Park, provided the protection rules are followed. Haxhi Ali Cave is within the park and can be reached from Vlorë only by boat. Experiences described there include boating and swimming; the cave is also associated with coastal history and local legends. Sazan Island is open to visitors. Mediterranean vegetation and beaches meet the seascape of the marine park there.

The island’s history can also be explored: Sazan is home to the remains of a military base, tunnels and buildings from the Cold War. The beaches and vegetation reveal a different side of the same island destination from the historic buildings. At Vlorë’s Old Beach and New Beach, along the bay, the scene includes wide pavements, green promenades, and seaside restaurants and cafés. The waters there are also calm and shallow.

Historic sites and culture

Vlorë’s historic centre contains 13 first-category cultural monuments housed in buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The National Museum of Independence is a distinct highlight: located south of Vlorë near the port, it was founded in 1936 and displays original objects, significant documents and works of art from the period of the Albanian National Renaissance and Independence. The Muradie Mosque, built in 1542 by Mimar Sinan, is considered an important example of Ottoman architecture.

Kaninë Castle reaches back even further in time. The fortification, of Illyrian origin, was rebuilt during the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods and is associated with Skanderbeg’s coronation as Prince of Albania in 1451. Visitors can explore its defensive walls and towers, as well as interior areas containing archaeological remains. These historic sites offer a way to trace different periods, from the fortification’s origins and later reconstructions to the architecture of Ottoman Vlorë.

Local cuisine and rural insights

Vlorë’s cuisine combines seafood with Albanian tradition. Signature ingredients and dishes include fresh fish, squid and mussels, as well as herb pies, lamb, local white cheese, olive oil and local wine. Dukat’s agritourism offerings provide another glimpse into rural life in Albania. The focus there is on organic wine, raki, olive oil, produce, eggs and medicinal herbs; visitors can also learn more about growing organic products and experience local hospitality.
