Petrelë as a Destination

Petrelë sits on a picturesque hill above the Erzen River and is known for its cobbled streets. Historical and archaeological sites shape the visitor experience, including Petrelë Castle, the monumental tomb of Persqop and the ruins of Persqop. The Fustanella Farm, an agritourism business, is also located in the Zaranik neighborhood. If you are looking for a hotel in Petrelë, you can start by deciding whether your stay will focus mainly on the castle, the archaeological traces or the local food culture.

Petrelë Castle and Local Cuisine

Petrelë Castle has ancient origins and was rebuilt in the Middle Ages. It is open to visitors; practical access conditions may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting. There are restaurants and cafés inside the castle where visitors can enjoy local cuisine with panoramic views. As individual businesses and the services they offer may change, check in advance what is available if you have specific plans. In this way, the castle combines a history of construction with a place to enjoy local cuisine.

Persqop: Tomb and Ancient City

The monumental tomb of Persqop is on the eastern side of Mount Vila. It is classified as a vaulted tomb with two chambers: its division into two rooms and vaulted construction give it its distinctive architectural character. It is associated with a fortified settlement dated to the 5th to 2nd centuries BC. This date refers to the settlement, not to a precisely dated construction of the tomb. The ruins of Persqop Castle, also known as the ancient city of Brysak, belong to an ancient city attributed to the Illyrian tribe of the Parthini. Its walls are made of massive stone blocks laid without mortar. The tomb’s architecture and the construction of the city walls can therefore be considered as distinct historical details.

Hiking Trails and Getting There

There are two different starting points for the route to Persqop. From the center of Petrelë village, visitors can walk to the ruins along a good rural road; conditions on rural roads may change. A hiking trail from Petrelë Castle to the ancient settlement of Persqop is also recommended. Check trail conditions and signage locally. The two descriptions give different starting points: one is the village center, the other the castle. If you plan to go on foot, check in advance which route suits your plans.

Petrelë Castle can also be reached by bus from the Southeast Terminal; after about 20 minutes, you arrive at Mamica Square in the center of Petrelë. Routes and journey times may change, so check the connection before travelling. The approximate bus journey time is a separate guide to getting there; it does not indicate how long the hiking trails to Persqop take.

Agritourism in Zaranik

The Fustanella Farm, an agritourism business, is located in the Zaranik neighborhood of Petrelë. The farm has an organic restaurant that follows a “farm-to-table” approach and offers wine tastings.
