Around Tirana, experiences range from museums and historic sites to mountain landscapes and regional cuisine. Tirana is in central Albania, near Dajti and about 30 kilometres from the Adriatic coast. The city provides access to nearby natural and historical destinations; markets and traditional eateries round out the sightseeing programme.

Mountain landscapes and natural destinations

Dajti National Park brings together mountain landscapes, dense forests and a diverse range of wildlife and plant life. Activities available there include hiking, mountain biking, camping and picnicking. The Dajti cable car passes over forests and valleys, offering views of Tirana and the surrounding region. This combines views of the capital with impressions of the forested mountain landscape.

There are also opportunities for hiking and exploring nature around Pëllumbas Cave. The cave is designated a natural monument for its geological, speleological and historical value. Inside, rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites shape the experience. Shëngjergji Waterfall offers another destination for hiking, nature walks, photography, relaxation and picnics. Shëngjergj lies on the Erzen River and is surrounded by the green mountain landscape of Mali me Gropa.

Mountain climbing, rock climbing and mountain biking are possible at Lake Bovilla. On the way there, the road from Tirana to Zall-Herr is paved; a rural section follows, which is passable by small cars. As road conditions can change, check them before setting out.

History in different places

Tirana’s history spans the early Illyrian and Roman periods, the Middle Ages and its designation as Albania’s capital in 1920. Various museums explore different chapters: House of Leaves focuses on state surveillance and control during the communist regime. It preserves original surveillance infrastructure and equipment from the former State Security centre.

BUNK'ART 1, near the Linza area, covers Albania’s political and military history from 1939 to the end of communism. Visitors can explore corridors, command rooms and installations relating to the period of isolation. BUNK'ART 2 has a different focus: the museum explores the communist dictatorship, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, surveillance and state control. Documents, authentic objects, State Security equipment and multimedia installations are presented in an underground bunker.

Petrelë also brings together landscape and history. The village sits on a hill above the Erzen, overlooking the Dajti Mountains and the Tirana plain. Petrelë Castle is a historically significant monument from the Byzantine period. Petrelë has good road connections and is well suited to day trips and cultural stays.

Markets, cuisine and seasonal highlights

The New Bazaar, near Tirana’s historic city centre, serves as a landmark for visitors. The covered market showcases fresh produce, spices and traditional Albanian specialities. Traditional restaurants in the city serve dishes such as Tirana stew, Tava e kosit, Jufka with chicken, as well as baklava and kadaifi.

In Petrelë, restaurants and guesthouses serve traditional Albanian cuisine made with natural products and regional recipes. During hot weather, river activities are also available. This seasonal focus differs from museum visits in Tirana and the hiking and nature experiences around Dajti, Pëllumbas and Shëngjergj. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether city history, cuisine or outdoor activities will be your main focus.

Tirana Castle is a cultural and tourist destination with traditional pubs, craft shops and exhibition spaces. Along with the bazaar and museums, it offers further perspectives on a city visit, while the natural destinations appeal to other interests. When choosing a hotel in Tirana County, you can consider which of these experiences matter most for your trip.
