In Rødding, historic churches and buildings are just as much a part of the area as forests, water and trails. Options range from three shorter walking routes to a 110-kilometre church route. Consider what you would like to shape your stay: local history, observing nature or getting active on the trail.

Churches and Local History

Rødding Højskole was founded in 1844 as Denmark’s and the world’s first folk high school. A large park surrounds the school. If you are planning a visit, check the local visitor guidelines in advance.

Rødding Sognekirke stands on the western edge of town, at its highest point. The church building dates from around the middle of the 12th century. It consists of an almost square Romanesque chancel and an elongated nave. Its location on the edge of town can thus be seen alongside the history of its architecture.

Rødding Frimenighedskirke also makes its own architectural statement: its style is unusual for South Jutland and inspired by East Danish village churches. The free church movement in Rødding emerged around the 1870s as the first of its kind in South Jutland. Services and church rites were to continue to be held in Danish. Historic buildings dating from around the time the railway was established still shape the town centre today.

Forests, Water and Trails

Højskoleengen is an open, green recreational area on the western edge of Rødding, between the school and the town. The Rødding Bæk has been uncovered there, and bridges and stepping stones offer opportunities to play by the water. Outdoor events can be held at the amphitheatre. The area thus combines water and greenery with a place for events.

Sommerlystskoven is a varied deciduous forest. Information boards along the trails introduce classic Danish forest tree species. At Raslebækken on the western edge of the forest, you can see the rare creeping valerian in spring. Brændstrup Bæk also winds along the edge of the forest.

Rødding has three walking routes, approximately 1.9, 3.3 and 4.3 kilometres long. The signposted Camino Frøs Herred is considerably longer: this 110-kilometre walking route connects ten churches and starts at Rødding Frimenighedskirke. Check current route information before setting out; access and landowner permissions may change locally. The 21-kilometre Rødding–Øster Lindet cycling route can also start at the same church.

As a destination nearby, Brøstrup Højene has a roadside car park and an information board. Access is via a round trip of just under one kilometre in total. Local access facilities may change, so check for current information on site.
