Discover Brørup Parish

Brørup Parish offers cultural and historical attractions on a range of scales: from a railway town church and a runestone to a manor, museum and trails through the landscape. When planning your trip, you can also choose between a cycling route, plantation trails, a market, a cinema and other leisure activities. These features offer various ways to choose the focus of your stay.

Churches and local history

St Johannes Church was built in 1925 as one of Denmark’s many railway town churches. Its architecture is clearly inspired by the style of the Greek basilica: the nave has three aisles, a tower stands at the west end, the walls are whitewashed and the roof is tiled. These features combine a clearly recognisable floor plan with the church’s distinctive architectural form.

The churchyard of Brørup Old Church contains three granite gravestones created by local artist Niels Hansen Jakobsen. Their number, material and creator give this small group a specific connection to local art history. The town’s history can also be traced at the station: today’s Brørup grew up around the station, which was established in 1874 when the railway to Esbjerg was built.

Runestone, manor and museum

The Malt Runestone bears one of Denmark’s oldest runic inscriptions and dates from the early Viking Age, around the 8th century. It is two metres tall and weighs three tonnes; it was found near the Kongeå in 1987. Today it is on display in the entrance area of Sønderskov Museum. Access to the runestone depends on the museum’s opening hours, which you should check before your trip.

Exhibitions at Sønderskov Museum cover the history of Sønderskov Manor, the dramatic Swedish Wars and the Fæsted gold. Specific displays may change; if you are interested in a particular subject, check the current exhibition programme. The present main building of Sønderskov Manor is a Renaissance complex adapted in the Baroque style, built by the nobleman Thomas Juel between 1614 and 1620. Today, the building houses the museum, the regional museum of Vejen Municipality. The manor, the surrounding estate landscape and the garden together form a cultural and historical unit.

Walking and cycling trails

The Møllestien walking trail starts at the car park east of Sønderskov Manor and leads through the estate landscape. In Stilde Plantation, the yellow route is one kilometre long; its surface is level, with no changes in elevation. The plantation trails comprise three routes of different lengths that start and finish at the same place. Seasonal changes can affect trail conditions; check the signs on site, as the route may also change.

The 30-kilometre Føvling–Brørup Cycle Route takes you through the history and cultural heritage of the landscape north of the Kongeå and south of Brørup. It consists of two loops, which you can cycle separately or together. This gives you a specific choice when planning: ride one loop or combine both. The total route length is 30 kilometres.

Market, cinema and leisure activities

An outdoor flea market is held every Friday morning throughout the year at Brørup Kræmmermarked. As this recurring event may change, check the latest information before travelling. Brørup Bio is run by an association of local volunteers. Its offerings include the Brørup Children’s Film Club and live events, including broadcasts from the Royal Danish Theatre. The cinema shows current releases, classics and specialist films; the programme may change, so check current screenings and events.

The seasonal Brørup Swimming Pool has two pools, including a children’s pool with two water slides. Facilities also include one-metre and three-metre diving boards and a two-metre diving platform. Check current opening dates before planning your visit. Søgården Brørup Bowling Centre has ten lanes. Nine are fitted with bumpers, four of which are electronic. Check whether the bowling centre is open before travelling.
