Jels – Lakes, Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Jels
Jels is shaped by a lake system in a tunnel valley. Three interconnected lakes form the heart of this landscape: Jels Nedersø covers 54 hectares, Jels Midtsø 25 hectares and Jels Oversø 9 hectares. They are connected by the Jels Å. The lakes’ different sizes and locations give the area a clear landscape orientation.
Lakes, nature and access to the water
Jels Søerne and Jels Skovene have been protected natural areas since 1960. Access is unrestricted along the shores of the lakes and in the forest and scrubland. At the same time, different rules apply to the lakes: Jels Oversø is a protected natural area where boating is prohibited. Private canoes and kayaks may, however, be launched on Jels Nedersø and Jels Midtsø.
At Jels Søbad, there is a circular bathing jetty with three areas: one for children, one for leisurely swimming and one for diving. This makes it easy to distinguish the designated uses of the bathing jetty. If you would rather explore the lake landscape on foot, marked hiking trails run around Jels Midtsø and Jels Nedersø.
Hiking trails and cycling route
The Jels Natur- og Planetsti runs along Jels Nedersø and Jels Midtsø. Along the route, scale models of the planets in our solar system are mounted on posts. The trail thus links the lakeshore landscape with an engaging depiction of the solar system.
Two hikes offer clear guidance on distance and trail markings: The trail around Jels Midtsø is 3.2 kilometres long and marked in yellow. The 3.5-kilometre Barsbøl-turen is marked in blue and passes through Barsbøl Skov, south of Jels Midtsø. One route goes around the lake, the other through the forest. The Hærvejsruten is also part of the trail network around Jels; it runs through forests north and south of the area.
For cyclists, the Cykelrute in the Jels area is 17 kilometres long and runs along Jels Sø. It starts in the centre of Jels at Jels Mølle, where parking is also available. This makes it possible to combine the cycle ride with a look at the historic mill, although the stated distance itself does not indicate the journey time or level of difficulty.
Mill, church and history
Jels Mølle is a large Dutch-style smock windmill, built in 1859. Its four floors, cap and original mechanism are fully preserved, including the millstones, hoist and grain hopper. The mill has been listed since 1959. Its preserved components give a tangible impression of how the milling machinery was constructed.
The present-day Jels Kirke was built in 1854 as a replacement. Its predecessor was a smaller, somewhat dilapidated church built of dressed granite. The church contains a granite baptismal font of Romanesque origin, adapted in 1854. The altarpiece is a plaster cast of Thorvaldsen’s relief depicting the Institution of the Eucharist. The relief was originally created for Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen.
Jels Voldsted is considered a possible site of a sizeable Viking fortress. The area measures about 160 Ă— 100 metres, and the rampart is approximately 300 metres long. The distance between the northern and southern boundaries is about 130 metres. The interpretation of the site as the location of a Viking fortress remains a possibility, not a certainty.
Events and planetarium
The annual Jels Vikingespil is an open-air theatre performance that has been supported by the efforts of several hundred volunteers since 1977. Planetarium Jels is not open on a regular basis and can only be visited during events and similar occasions. Check the event listings before travelling. This will help you distinguish between activities tied to specific occasions and the landscape features and trails that shape Jels regardless.
