Morsø Municipality: Coastal Trails, Moler and Culture
Accommodation in Morsø Municipality
Morsø Municipality can be explored in many different ways: along hiking trails by the Limfjord, among striking moler cliffs, or in museums that tell the story of the island and its people. There is plenty to discover outdoors, too—from searching for fossils to following trails through forests and meadows. When planning your hotel stay, it helps to consider which experiences you want to focus on: longer hikes, visits to Nykøbing Mors, or time on the coast.
Cliff scenery and trails along the Limfjord
The Kystruten på Mors runs for 150 kilometres along the Limfjord. It is divided into ten stages of roughly equal length, starting and ending in Nykøbing Mors. If you don’t want to plan a longer hike, you’ll find shorter loops and circular trails along the route, designed to take between one and three hours. This gives you a choice of different timeframes without committing to a single stage length.
At Hanklit, a moler cliff rises up to 60 metres above the Limfjord. It exposes a seabed almost 55 million years old; hiking routes run along the cliff and through the hilly landscape. Legind Bjerge, part of the larger geological area Det Tabte Land, also has hiking routes in natural surroundings. Marked routes, nature-guided tours and toilets help visitors find their way around.
Salgjerhøj Rundt passes through cliff scenery and a small cliffside forest, with views from Salgjerhøj. The route lies in the area around Morsø’s highest point: Salgjerhøj is 89 metres high. For a different landscape, follow the trails at the Skarregaard Nature and Culture Centre, which wind through forests and meadows and are well suited to nature walks.
Museums, art and stories
In Nykøbing and across the island, the Skulpturguide Mors leads visitors to artworks, sculptures and public art. Local artists feature prominently on the guided tour. Dueholm Monastery offers a historical focus: its exhibitions are housed in four historic buildings and cover the development of Nykøbing, Dueholm’s history as a monastery and manor house, prehistoric finds, and seafaring and fishing on and around the Limfjord by Mors.
Dueholm Monastery also has a children’s trail with hands-on activities based on the exhibitions. The Støberimuseet offers a different way to discover local history: films, pictures and storytelling exhibitions bring the foundry’s history to life. The Fossil and Moler Museum focuses on fossils of fish, birds, insects and plants, dating back more than 55 million years. The museum’s collection of moler fossils is among the finest in the world. Visitors can also search for fossils in the moler pits around the museum.
Legends and traces of earlier times are also part of the island’s story. Feggeklit is a striking moler formation in the Limfjord, shaped by time, wind and other natural forces. A local legend is associated with the site: according to the tale, Hamlet avenged himself on his wicked stepfather, King Fegge, there. The Skarregaard Nature and Culture Centre adds further glimpses into the past, with prehistoric traces, burial mounds and historic structures that bear witness to life through the centuries.
Coast and outdoor experiences
Ejerslev Harbour is a natural harbour where the sea, craftsmanship and nature come together. The harbour was built in 1911 and has since been an important starting point for fishing and life on the Limfjord. Visitors can walk along the moler slopes in the lagoon and search for fossils. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the harbour with landscape and geological history.
On an oyster safari, participants wear waders in the Limfjord and search the shallow water for Pacific oysters and European flat oysters. Waders, buckets and nets in different sizes are provided, along with practical tips on opening and preparing the oysters. At the end, participants enjoy the day’s catch as it is, accompanied by a glass of wine. As seasonal participation details may change, check them before making plans.
For a day at the beach, Sillerslev Strand offers shallow, calm water and Blue Flag status; the beach is particularly suitable for families. If you’re planning a trip across the Limfjord, the Feggesund ferry provides access to experiences on both sides, including attractions on Mors. Check the current timetable before planning a crossing.
