Flade lies at the transition between hills and lowland. When planning a trip, the main points of interest are the surrounding trails, viewpoints, and historical remains. Around Salgjerhøj, there are marked hiking trails and a path to the beach. In Flade, the Romanesque church and archaeological traces add to the picture. The possible focuses therefore range from landscape and hiking to history.

Landscape and views

The Flade Bakker are located in the area around Flade. Nearby, the Salgjerhøj-Hanklit area is one of the three largest protected landscapes on Mors. Hanklit has been protected under Danish nature conservation law since 1937 and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2026. The legal protection and the later listing are two distinct milestones for the landscape around Flade.

At Salgjerhøj, you can see several burial mounds. In clear weather, the view also reaches 22 of Mors’s 34 churches. Visibility of the churches therefore depends on weather conditions. Flade Church stands high in the landscape in eastern Mors. Its location and the view from Salgjerhøj offer different points of interest if you are interested in the island’s churches and landscape.

There is a bathing jetty at Skibsted Strand; check local conditions before your trip. From there, you can walk along the beach to Hanklit. There is a good chance of finding fossils there. If you look for fossils, please observe local rules. The beach path thus combines a walk with the opportunity to explore the geological landscape around Hanklit, without guaranteeing a find.

Historical traces in Flade

Flade Church dates from the Romanesque period and was built around 1150. Its position high in the landscape in eastern Mors provides a specific point of reference for the area’s history. Finds of stone tools in Flade point to human settlement since the Stone Age; later Bronze Age burial mounds add to the archaeological evidence. The stone tool finds and burial mounds represent traces from different periods.

A spring called Margrethe Kilde is located in the Flade Bakker. Until well into the 20th century, Margrethekilden in the area around Flade was a pilgrimage site: the sick and infirm visited it on Midsummer’s Eve in search of healing. This historical use describes an earlier tradition, not a current event or access policy.
