Rødding – Lake, Church and Monastery Route
Accommodation in Rødding
For a trip to Rødding, Rødding Sø, the more than 800-year-old Rødding Kirke and sections of Den Danske Klosterrute offer different points of interest. You can plan your stay around whether you would most like to explore nature and water, the village church or a particular route section. When looking for a hotel, this overview of the area’s attractions can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.
Rødding Sø and the landscape
Rødding Sø was restored in 2004 after having been drained for 100 years. The valley containing the lake was formed during the last Ice Age, about 15,000 years ago. These two dates place the present-day landscape in a long timeline: the valley was formed long ago, while the lake’s restoration is a much more recent event.
The lake covers 21 hectares and is up to 2.5 metres deep. Its area and maximum depth describe it from different perspectives and provide concrete points of reference for understanding the body of water. There are many birds in the surrounding area, and their presence varies with the seasons. If nature and birdlife are among your travel interests, the season is therefore a useful consideration when planning your trip.
The bathing area at Rødding Sø includes a grassy recreation area, a fire and barbecue site, tables and benches, a toilet and a zip line. The area is therefore characterised not only by its lakeside location but also by its specifically listed facilities. These provide various ways to spend time outdoors; which one is most important to you depends on whether you want to use a place to sit, the barbecue site or the zip line.
Village church and Monastery Route
Rødding Kirke is in the centre of town and is Rødding’s oldest building. The more than 800-year-old Romanesque village church is a notable landmark for exploring the history of the town. Its age, architectural style and location are three distinct features: they place the building in its historical and architectural context and locate it in the town centre.
Two sections of Den Danske Klosterrute also include the church. One 2.7-kilometre section runs from Rødding Kirke to Sødal Skov through hilly terrain. Another, 1.9-kilometre section runs from Batum to Rødding Kirke. The church is the starting point for the first section and the destination for the second. This lets you distinguish between two named route lengths and their different starting points and destinations, without treating them as one and the same section of the route.
Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out. The stated distances describe the respective sections; no walking time is provided. If you include the route in your travel plans, also bear in mind that the longer section passes through hilly terrain.
Local club life
Club life in Rødding also includes music and dance. The women’s choir Sødal Happy Singers meets on Tuesdays at 7 pm in Rødding Kirke. Its varied repertoire consists mainly of gospel and pop and may evolve over time. No previous experience or audition is required to take part; participation requirements and local dates may change. Check the details in advance if you are considering joining.
Rødding og Omegns Folkedanserforening dances on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 10 pm. The programme includes a half-hour coffee break and group singing. The season runs from mid-September to around the beginning of April; the schedule may change. The two associations therefore offer different cultural experiences: Sødal Happy Singers’ repertoire features gospel and pop, while the Folkedanserforening’s programme includes dancing and group singing. If you are interested in taking part, keep their respective schedules in mind and check the seasonal dates in advance.
