Møldrup: Trails, Nature and the Iron Age
Accommodation in Møldrup
Møldrup offers several distinct starting points for a trip: Himmerlandsstien, which follows a former railway line; the trails and landscapes around Borup Hede; and the Iron Age at Hvolris Jernalder. If you are looking for a hotel in Møldrup, you can first consider whether hiking, nature or archaeology will be the main focus of your trip. These different themes give you concrete points to consider when choosing your destination.
Trails and Landscapes Around Møldrup
Himmerlandsstien runs between Viborg and Hvam. It was established along a former railway line and is considered a cultural experience route along its entire length. Along the way, it passes through distinctive landscapes and natural habitats, including former railway woodlands. In Møldrup, Astrupparken is part of Himmerlandsstien.
At the former railway station site on Himmerlandsstien, there is a picnic shelter with tables and benches, as well as an outdoor fire pit with benches. Next to the former station building, at the stop on the station grounds, there is a public toilet. The route experience in Møldrup therefore also includes practical facilities at the former station.
Borup Hede is a central part of the 450-hectare protected area in Simested Ådal. A marked hiking trail leads, among other places, to the 27 m-high Brakbjerg viewpoint. From there, you can enjoy a wide view over most of the river valley. Borup Hede also has two marked circular trails, approximately 1 km and 4.5 km long. The different distances help you plan the length of your hike. The car parks at Borup Hede and the gravel path between them are suitable for wheelchair users.
Other nature and trail options have their own distinct features: Mølleskoven dog park in Møldrup has a trail network and open grassy areas. Møldrup Bål- og Aktivitetsplads has approximately 1 km of marked footpaths. Information boards explain the nature at the site and around the trail network. Cycle Route 27 runs near Bål- og Aktivitetsplads.
Facilities and Activities
Møldrup Bål- og Aktivitetsplads has two shelters, a covered shelter with a fire pit, a composting toilet and a basic fire pit. Check the current status of the facilities before you arrive. Møldrup also has an activity area by the football pitch and multi-purpose court, with a skate park, ramps and a parkour course. These facilities are quite different from the marked trails: the focus here is on a purpose-built area in town for a range of activities.
The Iron Age at Hvolris Jernalder
Hvolris Jernalder is located at Herredsvejen 135, V. Bjerregrav, 9632 Møldrup, and is surrounded by woodland and hills. The museum focuses primarily on the Iron Age around the year 1. Archaeological excavations are located right next to a reconstructed Iron Age village, and an archaeological exhibition displays Iron Age finds from excavations at the site. Excavations, reconstruction and exhibition therefore come together at this site.
Summer activities at Hvolris Jernalder include living history, traditional crafts, archery and cooking over an open fire. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check the specific dates in the summer programme. There are, among other options, bus connections from Møldrup towards Viborg and Aalestrup; for your specific travel plans, it is recommended that you check departure times in advance.
