Skals: Nature Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Skals
Skals offers two distinct starting points for planning a trip: the landscape along the Skals Å and Hjarbæk Fjord, and local traces of educational and agricultural history. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Skals, you can first consider whether nature trails, a connection to the water, or cultural history are important to your trip. The landscape and local history form separate focal points.
Skals Å, Hjarbæk Fjord, and Trails
The Skals Å flows into Hjarbæk Fjord. At this confluence, the Himmerlandsstien crosses the river. This nature trail runs between Viborg and Hvam, placing the specific river crossing within the context of a longer route. A former railway bridge over the Skals Å offers views of Hjarbæk Fjord and the Skals Å valley. The crossing at the confluence and the views from the bridge offer different perspectives: one is about the point where the river and fjord meet, while the other looks out over the fjord and river valley.
South of Skals lies a large restored natural area with newly created trails. They lead from Skals to the Skals Å and onward to Hjarbæk Fjord. For route planning, this route differs from the Himmerlandsstien: the trails in the natural area lead from Skals toward the river and fjord, while the Himmerlandsstien runs as a nature trail between Viborg and Hvam. This lets you distinguish the route from Skals from the longer stretch between Viborg and Hvam.
Water Access and Practical Information
A platform on the dam at the Skals Å serves as a landing point for kayaks. Unlike the trails and viewpoints, this is a specific facility for kayaks on the river. If kayaking is one of your interests, you can take this point into account when planning your trip.
The fire-pit area in Skals has a picnic table with benches. The toilet is in a multipurpose building on the other side of the cycle path. This location is important for finding your way: the toilet is beyond the cycle path, not directly next to the fire-pit area. Check the current availability of the toilet and facilities at the site before your trip.
Educational and Agricultural History
Cultural history also has two specific points of reference. Skals Højskole operates in the premises of the former Skals Højskole; the former school was founded in 1868. Alongside the present-day institution, this points to an educational history whose origins date back to the 19th century. In Rosengården, a granite monument with a portrait relief for Minister of Agriculture Anders Nielsen was unveiled in 1920. The location, material, and dedication connect the monument to local remembrance and agriculture. The folk high school and the monument offer different perspectives: one points to education, the other to a named person and agricultural history.
