Accommodation in Stoholm
When looking for a hotel in Stoholm, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: hiking and outdoor activities, nearby nature, church architecture or a visit timed around an event. You can also factor the train journey to the centres of Viborg and Skive into your travel plans.
Hiking and outdoor activities in Stoholm
The Kalk Kaminoen is a 30-kilometre hiking trail between Stoholm and Skelhøje. Part of the route follows the trail “Sporet ved Smollerup Kirke”. A hiking trail totalling 2.5 kilometres also starts by the car park near Birkesø. The different lengths give you a concrete basis for comparison when planning: the Kalk Kaminoen connects two named places, while the shorter trail near Birkesø starts at the car park.
There are other named options for outdoor activities in the town. Route 786 Stoholm Motionsrute is a signposted exercise route. The Stoholm Fritids- og Kulturcenter has a mountain bike and skills track; Børneskoven is home to an orienteering course established by Stoholm SFO. The Blomsterbakken playground in Stoholm has a climbing and play tower with a slide and climbing net.
Nature near Birkesø and Jordbro Ådal
The Birkesø and Jordbro Ådal area near Stoholm offers a varied landscape of lake, plantations, heathland and river valley. Birkesø is a very nutrient-poor lake, also known as a lobelia lake. At the northern end of the lake are a sandy beach and a public bathing area. The Birkesø area is part of the EU Habitats Site H 39.
These natural sites complement the hiking trails with a different focus for your trip planning. At Birkesø, you can consider the lake together with the 2.5-kilometre trail that starts there; by contrast, the Kalk Kaminoen is described as a longer connection between Stoholm and Skelhøje. This lets you make your choice based on the stated distances and landscape features.
Church architecture and history
Stoholm Church was built between 1969 and 1971 and inaugurated on 7 March 1971. It is considered a typical example of modernist church architecture from the second half of the 20th century. Inside, light entering through a large eastern gable window shapes the character of the space. The church thus combines a building with a clearly established date with a distinctive architectural feature.
The railway history is also part of the town’s historical background. When the line between Viborg and Skive opened in 1864, the station in Feldingbjerg parish was named Stoholm. This documented history of the name provides a point of interest in its own right, alongside the more recent church building.
Planning your stay around events
Anlægget Park is the venue for the annual Stoholm Festuge. The park can be accessed via Anlægsgade and Stadionvej, and parking is also available there. If you would like to plan your stay around Festuge, check the current event dates before you travel.
Another long-standing tradition in Stoholm is the Sankt HansbĂĄl. It includes a communal meal, a speech by the fire and bread baked on sticks on the lawn in front of the Stoholm Fritids- og Kulturcenter. These details give a concrete impression of how the tradition brings people together, without requiring you to assume that there is a specific programme.
The centres of Viborg and Skive are about 10 minutes away from Stoholm by train. If you are also planning to spend time in either city centre during your stay, you can take this approximate journey time into account when choosing your destination and check the timetable before travelling.
