Ugelbølle: Hiking, beaches and an Ice Age landscape
Accommodation in Ugelbølle
When looking for a hotel in Ugelbølle, it helps to decide in advance what you want to focus on during your trip. Hiking, beach visits and the protected Ice Age landscape offer different ways to spend your stay. If you know whether a route, swimming or the views of the landscape will be your priority, you can plan your hotel stay around it.
Hiking the Mols Route and the Stenrunden
The Mols Route is about 80 km long, measured from the bathing establishment at Riis Skov in Aarhus to the harbour in Grenaa. It is part of the E1 long-distance hiking trail. A section of the E1 Mols Route, a long-distance trail established by the Danish Hiking Association, runs along Ugelbølle Beach. Nearby, in Rønde, the Stenrunden offers a different scale: this 4.2 km circular walk passes five large erratic boulders included in the project and is designated as a short walking route with an estimated walking time of about one hour. The two routes therefore differ both in length and in the time required. Check local conditions before setting out on the Mols Route.
Terminal moraines, glacial valleys and protected landscape
The Rønde-Ugelbølle hills are a terminal moraine ridge that formed in front of a glacier 200 to 400 metres high. The ice came from the Baltic Sea and reached Ebeltoft, Mols and Rønde 18,000 years ago. As it slowly melted there, it left behind glacial valleys such as Kalø Vig, as well as stones of all sizes. Together, the ridge, valleys and stones left behind illustrate the landforms created by the same glacial processes.
The protected area south of Ugelbølle is a landscape-geological attraction. It covers 139 hectares of farmland between Ugelbølle and Kalø Vig. Ugelbølle’s protected landscape preserves the view from the old Aarhus–Grenaa road across the hilly terminal moraine around Kalø Vig. From a viewpoint on Tangvejen between Ugelbølle and Ugelbølle Beach, you can look out over the protected farmland. Both the geological formation of the landscape and the view across the agricultural land are therefore highlights here.
Swimming and fishing at Ugelbølle Beach
Ugelbølle Beach has a car park, a toilet and a bathing jetty. As these visitor facilities may change, it is a good idea to check shortly before your visit. The beach offers excellent swimming in very shallow water, especially for families with young children. Swimming conditions vary by season. There are good fishing opportunities from the point east of the car park; observe local fishing regulations. The beach offers distinct options: shallow water is ideal for swimming, while the point is identified as a fishing spot.
