Ahl: Coastal Trails, Ahl Plantation and Nature
Accommodation in Ahl
The defining features of a stay in Ahl include its coastal landscape, Ahl Plantation and routes for cycling and walking excursions. If you are looking for hotels in Ahl, these interests can help structure your trip planning: the Ahl Route focuses on cycling paths, while walking trails and the route around Ahl Hage offer different perspectives on the surrounding area. The contrast between the Plantation’s flat coastal meadow and the sand spit with shallow water at Ahl Hage is particularly striking.
Cycling and walking in Ahl Plantation
The Ahl Route is about 18 kilometres long and runs along minor roads and paved cycle paths. It includes a detour into Ahl Plantation, making it possible to combine the cycle route with the woodland scenery.
The walking trail through Ahl Plantation follows the coast, passes Ahl Beach and then returns through the forest. Along the way, it offers views of a bird sanctuary and Ebeltoft. While the cycling route offers a detour into the plantation, this walking trail itself runs through the area.
The original plantings in Ahl Plantation took place in 1890 and 1910. It lies on a flat coastal meadow formed by centuries of sand deposits. The plantation has coniferous and deciduous trees and also includes a sphagnum bog. Views of the bay, the sea and Mols Bjerge add to the landscape. Here, an open, flat coastal meadow, wooded areas and a bog come together.
Ahl Hage: shallow water and coastal scenery
At Ahl Hage, two route descriptions offer different perspectives: the GĂĄsehage Route runs around Ahl Hage, while a route marked with yellow dots leads through Ahl Hage alongside the shallow water. Check the route markings locally before setting out. Ahl Hage itself is a sand spit with shallow water.
On the north coast of Ahl Hage is a defensive earthwork dating from the English Wars of 1801 to 1814. At Ahl Hage North Beach, there are woods and low-growing oak vegetation to the west, while open salt marshes extend to the east. The eastern salt marshes have mounds made by yellow meadow ants. The contrast between the wooded coast and open marshland characterises this stretch of coast.
Bird protection and nature by the water
The northwestern boundary of the Ebeltoft Vig Wildlife Reserve runs from the tip of Ahl Hage to the mouth of the Vibækken. The reserve protects Ebeltoft Vig as a resting area for waterbirds. In the area around Ahl, the protected part of the inlet serves year-round as a resting place for flocks of mute swans, mallards and gulls.
The seabed at Ahl Beach also offers its own connection with nature: it consists of sand, clay, stones and eelgrass, and is suitable for snorkelling and small underwater discoveries. Leaflets with ideas for walks and activities are available at the northern car park at Ahl Hage. At Ahl Hage, two shelters in the oak grove form part of a sea-kayaking route. Since their availability may change, it is advisable to check before visiting.
