Bogens – History, Trails and Coast
Accommodation in Bogens
Bogens can be explored for trip planning from three different perspectives: the history of Bogensholm, the coastal landscape at Bogens Beach and the trails in Mols Bjerge. These topics appeal to different interests and do not have to be combined into a single outing. If you are looking for a hotel in Bogens, you can first consider whether history, cycling, a trail with a viewpoint or the coastal area is especially important for your trip planning. The details below will help you consider these topics separately.
The history of Bogensholm and the Bogensholm Stone
Bogensholm dates back to the Middle Ages. Several of the small farms in Mols Bjerge belonged to Bogensholm. This means the historical connection includes not only the estate itself, but also several small farms across a larger landscape. The estate’s long history provides a starting point for placing it in time; its ownership history points to a specific person: Bishop Peder Vognsen was probably the first recorded owner of Bogensholm.
The Bogensholm Stone adds an archaeological object to this historical perspective. The 2,500-year-old rock carving stone was found at the Bogensholm estate. It features a wheel cross, 25 cup marks and a groove. These features make the stone tangible as an individual find, while its dating places it in a much earlier period. The stone is on display at the National Museum of Denmark (Nationalmuseet). If you would like to see it there, check whether it is currently on display before visiting the museum.
Coast and connections with nature
Bogens Beach is located in Ebeltoft Vig. The bathing jetty at the beach is called “Den tilgængelige badebro” and is 30 metres long. Check the jetty’s current condition before your visit, as physical facilities can change.
In Mols Bjerge, the habitat of the hylde-gøgeurt is on a slope overlooking Ebeltoft Vig, near Bogens Sø. The beach in the bay and this slope near the lake are different natural settings: one leads to the coast, while the other is in the natural area around the lake. This lets you distinguish between the beach and the landscape of Mols Bjerge when planning your trip.
A trail to a viewpoint or a cycling loop
Along the Mols Bjerge Trail, a sign points to a viewpoint with picnic tables and benches. A trail leads downhill from this viewpoint to Bogens. You can use the viewpoint and the destination as two landmarks for planning your route; the picnic tables and benches provide seating at the viewpoint.
Rundt om Bjergene is another way to experience Mols Bjerge: it is a 15 km hilly loop through and around Mols Bjerge, suitable for mountain bikes as well as regular bicycles. This cycling option can therefore be assessed by its length, hilly terrain and the types of bicycle mentioned. Unlike the trail from the viewpoint downhill to Bogens, this option focuses explicitly on a loop. When planning, you can first decide whether you prefer a cycling loop or the described trail towards Bogens.
