Røjle Klint, paths along the Lillebælt and maritime heritage give Middelfart Municipality its many different facets. Between geological landscapes, walks and museums, you can tailor your trip to suit different interests—with routes ranging from the 2.3-kilometre Keramikruten to the 27-kilometre coastal path.

Coast, Geology and Nature

Røjle Klint is 40 metres high and consists of moraine clay and meltwater sand dating from three ice ages. Visitors may be able to find fossils on the beach below the cliff. Middelfart Municipality has 14 official beaches, including five with Blue Flag status. Gamborg Fjord is also part of the natural setting: it is part of the Lillebælt EU Habitat Area and an internationally protected bird sanctuary.

The bird tower at Føns Vang offers a view of the landscape and its birdlife. From there, you can see across Føns Vang and the birds that live there. If you would like to experience the water for yourself, Føns has an officially registered and approved open-water swimming lane measuring 200 × 50 metres; changing facilities are available.

The Lillebæltsstien connects Strib in the north with Gamborg in the south. Over 27 kilometres, the coastal path passes through the town of Middelfart and across the Hindsgavl Peninsula. Check access conditions before setting out on a hike. The Lillebælt coast also offers plenty of places to launch kayaks. Conditions are often sheltered from the wind, making them suitable for beginners, while experienced paddlers can also find challenging currents.

Walks and Choosing a Route

Keramikruten is a free, 2.3-kilometre walking route in Middelfart. It connects the CLAY Keramikmuseum with the waterfront promenade and the old town. The Clayfinding system helps you find your way: glazed tiles and stones are set into the cobblestones. The route is free and open to everyone around the clock, every day; check the latest access information before your visit.

The Kongebroruten takes you through a different landscape: this six-kilometre circular route passes Hindsgavl Castle, goes through the forest and follows the north coast of the Hindsgavl Peninsula. This varied hike passes through the peninsula’s natural landscapes in Lillebælt Nature Park. Klimaruten offers an urban alternative: the three-kilometre walk takes you through peaceful urban nature and shows how rainwater is channelled along the surface through channels and depressions, where it can seep into the ground locally.

If you want to compare route lengths when choosing, Keramikruten’s 2.3 kilometres and Klimaruten’s three kilometres can be compared with the six-kilometre Kongebroruten and the 27-kilometre Lillebæltsstien. Staurby Skov also has a 5.6-kilometre mountain biking trail. It is a one-way route, marked with blue arrows, and includes a skills area. As route details and markings may change, it is worth checking the latest information before setting out. Staurby Skov also has a 12-hole disc golf course. National cycling routes pass through Middelfart Municipality.

Ceramics, Museums and Maritime Heritage

CLAY Keramikmuseum is the largest museum in the Nordic region for ceramic art, crafts and design. Café CLAY serves light lunches featuring seasonal dishes such as soup, sandwiches and salads made with fresh ingredients, as well as homemade cakes to enjoy with coffee. The history of ceramic production is also part of the local heritage: Middelfart Lervarefabrik used locally available blue clay to make utility and decorative items from the 1890s through the 1940s.

MIND Museum is housed in a patients’ building at the former Middelfart psychiatric sanatorium, which was in operation from 1888 to 1999. Its collection of objects relating to the history of psychiatry is the largest in Denmark. The museum is wheelchair accessible; parking is available behind the building.

Gl. Havn is Denmark’s first cultural harbour and was recognised by the Skibsbevaringsfonden in 2023. About ten heritage ships can be seen there. The jolle houses contain a maritime exhibition, and an audio station plays the sounds of harbour porpoises. Lillebæltsværftet is now run by volunteers who keep traditional craftsmanship and maritime cultural heritage alive. Boats are still built there using traditional clinker construction.
