Middelfart: Ceramic Art, History and Trails
Accommodation in Middelfart
When looking for hotels in Middelfart, you can tailor your stay to the themes that interest you: ceramic art and history, walking and cycling routes, or nature and coastal experiences. Museums, themed routes and walking trails vary in subject matter and length, giving you concrete points of reference to help choose a focus for your trip.
Art, Architecture and Unique Perspectives
The CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art in Middelfart is Denmark’s only specialist museum for ceramic art, crafts and design. Its Royal Copenhagen collection includes more than 55,000 objects and is one of Europe’s finest porcelain collections. The museum therefore brings together a clearly defined specialist field and an extensive collection as a cultural highlight.
The 2.3-kilometre Keramikruten (Ceramics Route) connects ceramic art with the harbour atmosphere and city life. Unlike the museum, the route centres on a trio of art, harbour and city. Henner Friisers Hus adds architecture to these themes: the house is a Renaissance gabled house built around 1580.
Bridgewalking Lillebælt offers a different kind of experience. It takes you to the top of the old Lillebælt Bridge, 60 metres above sea level. This lets you consider cultural themes, historic architecture and an activity on the bridge as distinct travel interests.
Psychiatric History and Garden Art
MIND presents more than 100 years of Danish psychiatric history. Its time span and national focus give this museum a distinct profile alongside ceramic art and architecture. MIND also has a sensory garden where you can feel different textures underfoot while walking barefoot. There is also a garden landscaped with artworks from the Danish Arts Foundation.
At MIND, history, sensory experiences and artistic design come together. So if you are organising cultural experiences by theme, the museum offers something different from CLAY, which specialises in ceramics, or the Renaissance gabled house. Its highlights range from a long history to tangible experiences in the garden.
Walking and Cycling Routes
Length, route and intended use are helpful points of comparison when choosing a trail. The Klimaruten (Climate Route) is a three-kilometre walking trail through the four sections of Klimabyen. The Banestien is longer, at 4.3 kilometres, and follows a disused railway line from the new Lillebælt Bridge to Vejlby. It passes through Staurby Forest and by open fields, and can be used on foot or by bicycle.
The two routes therefore differ in more than length: the Klimaruten is described as a walking trail, while the Banestien can also be used by bicycle and takes in forest and open fields. The distances make it possible to compare the routes directly without specifying a walking or cycling time.
Nature, Coast and an Annual Climate Event
The Hindsgavl Peninsula is home to a 165-hectare wildlife park with red and fallow deer. The landscape there also includes beech forest and coastal slopes. The wildlife is thus combined with two distinct landscape features, giving the peninsula a natural highlight alongside the urban and cultural themes.
You can kayak along the coast from Middelfart Marina. This activity differs from the walking and cycling routes described above: the focus here is on travelling along the coast by water, rather than on a route with a specified length.
The Climate People’s Meeting (Klimafolkemødet) takes place every August in Middelfart and focuses on climate. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the current programme in advance. August is the recurring time of year; the programme will help you plan your visit.
