When planning your trip, Sandager and the surrounding area offer a range of different focuses: coast, Baunet, church art and ceramics. When comparing hotels in Sandager, your planned excursions can be a helpful guide.

Coast and beach near Sandager

Immediately south of Emtekær Nor on West Funen, an almost four-hectare beach area was placed under protection in 1967. The area was protected with the aim of keeping it open to bathers. This is separate from the beach at Sandager Næs in the vicinity of Sandager, where there is shallow bathing water and a bathing jetty. The beach is one of six Badepunkt beaches in the Municipality of Assens. From there, the view stretches across the Lillebælt towards Bågø and Brandsø.

The route from Sandager to the beach at Sandager Næs goes via Baunevej and then Ved Klinten. Check current path conditions before your visit. The beach has a toilet with running water that is open year-round. The Sandager Næs shelter site is also in the vicinity of Sandager, with a traditional shelter made of wooden logs.

The difference is clear when choosing between the coastal and hilly landscapes: at the beach, bathing water, the jetty and the view across the Lillebælt are the main attractions; Baunet offers an elevated viewpoint and its own access paths.

Baunet and its paths

Baunet rises more than 30 metres above sea level. You can reach the hill via a steep stone staircase or a small natural walking path. Below Baunet, there are three picnic tables with benches, a barbecue and a small playground. On the hill there is a shelter and a fire pit; the suggested “Culture & Nature” route passes Baunet.

This provides several details for planning at the same named hill: the two access options described, facilities below Baunet, and a shelter and fire pit on the hill. The steep staircase is explicitly distinct from the small natural walking path.

Church art and crafts

Sandager Church contains a Madonna figure carved by Claus Berg at the beginning of the 16th century. The Late Gothic wall paintings date from around 1490 to 1500 and were executed by the Funen lily master workshop (fynske liljemesterværksted). During a later renovation, the tower and the northern porch were built of monk bricks. The tower spire was installed by the Lighthouse and Coastal Service (Fyr- og Vagervæsenet) as a navigation mark. Together, these details offer insight into the artistic and architectural history of the church, without belonging to a single construction phase.

Ceramics are also among the possible interests around Sandager. The EK Keramik workshop is located at Torupvej 7 in Sandager, 5610 Assens. Pottery courses in modelling, wheel throwing and slab-building techniques are offered there. Check the address before your visit and enquire about courses and dates in advance, as availability may change. Family days for children accompanied by adults can be arranged if there is sufficient interest; prior contact is required.

Routes and excursions in the wider area

Stage 11 of the Østersøruten leads north from Assens to Middelfart via winding roads near the coast. Near Sandager, it is possible to make a detour to the Torup Bakkegård farm shop. Located in the wider area around Sandager, the farm shop offers fruit and vegetables grown on the farm, as well as drinks, meat, cheese and other specialities. This makes it possible to combine the route description with a specific stopover without conflating the stage route with the detour.

Puge Mølle is also located in the vicinity of Sandager, in an old half-timbered building. The beach, Baunet, church art, ceramics and regional routes thus offer various points of interest for your trip to Sandager.
